On Sunday, the family members were allowed to visit Sheikh Nemr, who has been on a hunger strike since July 19. His sister said the detained cleric had turned weaker and that signs of torture were seen on his head. The family visited him for the second time since his arrest earlier in July. They were allowed to visit him for the first time on July 15. Sheikh Nemr was attacked, injured and arrested by the security forces of the Al Saud regime while driving from a farm to his house in the Qatif region of Eastern Province on July 8. [21 July 2012] Rising protests in Saudi Arabia - English Saudi protesters have taken to the streets in the Qatif region of Eastern Province to demand the release of prominent Shia cleric Sheikh Nemr al-Nemr. The demonstrators on Sunday chanted slogans against the repressive regime of Al Saud. Sheikh Nemr was attacked, injured and arrested by Saudi security forces while driving from a farm to his house in Qatif on July 8. He is currently in a military hospital in the city of Dhahran. According to Human Rights Watch, the Saudi regime "routinely represses expression critical of the government."

[18 July 2012] Al Saud fails to implement reforms - English Despite being world's biggest crude exporter, sixty percent of the people in Saudi Arabia live below the country's poverty line, a Saudi newspaper reported. In an article published by the Okaz daily, Saudi journalist, Khaled al-Harbi wrote that while Saudi Arabia earns 1,500 billion riyals (around 400 billion dollars) a year, the average salary of an ordinary Saudi citizen should not be 1,500 riyals (around 400 dollars). According to official figures released by Consultative Assembly of Saudi Arabia (Shura), about 22 percent of Saudi citizens - at least 3 million citizens - live below the poverty line. [11 July 2012] Saudis fear revolution will hit kingdom - English Tens of thousands of Saudi Arabian protesters have held a demonstration against the Al Saud regime in the Qatif region of oil-rich Eastern Province. The demonstrators took to the streets on Tuesday to condemn the Riyadh regime for the deadly crackdown on protests. The protesters were also condemning the detention of prominent Shia cleric Sheikh Nemr al-Nemr, who was attacked and arrested earlier in the day. Since February 2011, protesters have held demonstrations on an almost regular basis in Saudi Arabia, mainly in Qatif and the town of Awamiyah in Eastern Province, calling for the release of all political prisoners, freedom of expression and assembly, and an end to widespread discrimination. However, the demonstrations have turned into protests against the Al Saud regime, especially since November 2011, when Saudi security forces killed five protesters and injured many others in the province. Continued Egyptian crackdown on tunnels between the Gaza Strip and the Sinai Peninsula has caused prices of goods to increase. Under the choking Israeli blockade, tunnels are considered as a lifeline for over 1.7 million Gazans. Tunnels are used as pathways to bring in badly needed supplies into Gaza including cement and fuel. Hamas says the recent Egyptian move will increase the suffering in the coastal enclave. People are seen standing in line for hours just to get few liters of fuel for their cars and electrical generators. Khawaja, the co-founder and former president of the Bahrain Center for Human Rights, began a hunger strike in early February to protest against the life sentence he received last year and Manama's ongoing crackdown on peaceful protests. Amnesty International has also called for the 'immediate and unconditional release' of al-Khawaja, considering him a 'prisoner of conscience, detained solely for exercising his right to freedom of expression.' Hunger strikes seem to have an effect on the Israeli authorities who are holding thousands of Arabs and Palestinians in jails without trial.
