As embassies across the EU check for American eavesdropping equipment, French President Francois Hollande has been the most vocal European critic of the recently revealed US spy program.
The consequences are becoming apparent, as France has called for a \"temporary suspension\" of free trade talks between Brussels and Washington. The French public has been appalled by the enormous scope of the illegal US espionage effort, in which a \"normal\" day included taking an inventory of 2 million French phone calls, as well as spying on the French embassies in the US and at the United Nations.

Political turmoil in Egypt. The country\'s constituent assembly has approved a new draft constitution. The Muslim Brotherhood has already rejected the charter.
The Brotherhood has slammed interim authorities, saying they\'re distorting Egypt\'s legitimate constitution which was adopted during Mohammed Morsi\'s presidency. The final draft was approved by a 50-member constituent assembly and will now be handed to the military-backed interim president. Adly Mansour is expected to set a date for a referendum on the charter. The draft calls for elections, parliamentary or presidential, within 90 days after the adoption of the constitution. If approved, the new constitution will strengthen the army\'s hand. It will also forbid the formation of parties based on religious grounds.

Egypt\'s public prosecutor has ordered the trial of three political activists on charges of protesting without permission and an alleged assault on police. Among those to stand trial is Ahmed Maher, the founder of the April 6 movement. The movement helped ignite the popular uprising in 2011 that led to the ouster of former dictator Hosni Mubarak. Still, no date has been fixed for the trial. But this is the first case of activists being charged under the provisions of a new, controversial protest law. The Interim President, Adly Mansour signed the Law in November. It bans gatherings of more than 10 people without prior permit. Critics have described the move as an attempt to stifle the right to public protest.
