Ten international human rights groups have written to the United Nations about the torture of journalists in Bahrain.
The letter, signed by the Media Legal Defense Initiative and the International Federation for Human Rights, among others, has been sent to U-N special rapporteurs Frank La Rue and Juan Méndez. The rights groups have called for an investigation into the arrest, detention, and torture of Mohamed Hassan, Hussain Hubail, and Qassim Zain al-Deen. All three journalists were arrested in August and face trial on charges related to their reporting on the anti-regime demonstrations. Thousands of people, including rights activists and journalists, have been detained and tortured since the uprising began in Bahrain in 2011. In Egypt, an alliance of Islamic groups called anti-coup alliance has finally made its widely-expected announcement about the constitutional referendum slated for January.
The alliance was formed following the July\'s ouster of former president Mohamed Morsi --- a move which it sees as a military coup. In its long-awaited announcement, the alliance said it had weighed the option of rallying for a No-vote, but finally decided to go for a boycott. The alliance said it\'s against the referendum, because it will be held by a government which it says has killed and detained many people following Morsi\'s ouster.

Egyptians have held a mass funeral for victims of the violence that broke out on the third anniversary of Egypt\'s 2011 revolution.
The situation remains tense across the country, a day after deadly clashes pitting supporters of ousted president Mohamed Morsi against the security forces and rival demonstrators. The Health Ministry says nearly fifty people died in the clashes during demonstrations marking the anniversary of Egypt\'s 2011 revolution. Most of the victims are believed to be supporters of Morsi. Amnesty International has issued a report saying that Egypt has seen violence on an unprecedented scale since Morsi\'s ouster in a military coup in July. Meanwhile, Egypt\'s interim government announced on Sunday that it had decided to hold the presidential election before the parliamentary polls. The move is likely to intensify speculation over whether army chief General Abdel Fattah al-Sisi will be a candidate in the presidential election.

An Egyptian court has sentenced 26 people to death for plotting attacks on ships in the Suez Canal.
The men, who were tried in their absence, were charged while in custody. The court accuses the defendents of founding and leading a terrorist cell, which wanted to disrupt the major shipping route. It also referred the verdict to the Grand Mufti of Cairo, who now has to validate the sentences. The recent spate of violence has rocked Egypt, after former president Mohamed Morsi was ousted by the military in July, and placed under arrest. The latest ruling comes as another court in the country sentenced over 2-hundred Morsi supporters to prison over a variety of charges on Tuesday.

Egyptian security forces have once again attacked anti-government protesters joining rallies in several cities, killing four protesters.
Dozens of others were injured as security forces fired tear gas and shots at protesters in the capital Cairo, Alexandria and the canal city of Suez. Several demonstrators were also wounded when thugs attacked supporters of ousted President Mohamed Morsi in the northern city of Damietta. The clashes erupted when anti-government protesters joined rallies after Friday prayers to denounce plans by Defense Minister Abdul Fatah Sisi to run for president. They are also angry over a presidential law issued on Thursday that installs the defense minister as the supreme commander of the military council. Egypt has been the scene of weekly protests since the country\'s first democratically- elected president was ousted last July.
