Now, the three activists have been sentenced to prison for three years on charges related to violating a prohibitive new protest law issued by the military-backed interim government that ousted president Mohamed Morsi. Egyptian security forces have in recent weeks extended their ongoing crackdown on the opposition movement of the Muslim Brotherhood to now include liberal political activists.

Los árabes sin Islam son como los politeístas que adoraban ídolos: ídolos de la ignorancia, ídolos de la opulencia. Y hay algunos de esos hoy en Líbano. Que en vez de hacer Ruku (reverencia) a Allah, reverencian al dólar y al riyal, y se inclinan a consideraciones falsas, cuando los intereses y consideraciones reales; su historia y su futuro, están en Palestina.

In Egypt, three prominent activists have gone on trial for defying a controversial protest law. Ahmed Maher, Ahmed Douma, and Mohamed Adel are accused of organizing an illegal protest on November 30. Maher and Douma are also charged with allegedly assaulting police officers at another rally last month. The charges stem from a new law imposed by the military-backed government following the ouster of president Mohamed Morsi in early July. Maher and Douma supported Morsi\'s removal, but oppose what they see as the army\'s attempts to crack down on freedom of expression. Reports say the trial of the three leading figures-- who had a major role in the 2011 downfall of former regime-- has been adjourned now. Cairo has drawn international fire for the protest law, which has sparked violent protests nationwide. The law bans any protest assembly without prior permission from the police.

Among those to stand trial is Ahmed Maher, the founder of the April 6 movement. The movement helped ignite the popular uprising in 2011 that led to the ouster of former dictator Hosni Mubarak. Still, no date has been fixed for the trial. But this is the first case of activists being charged under the provisions of a new, controversial protest law. The Interim President, Adly Mansour signed the Law in November. It bans gatherings of more than 10 people without prior permit. Critics have described the move as an attempt to stifle the right to public protest.
