Complete Sermon of Prophet Muhammad SAWW at Ghadeer Khum by Agha Hassan Mujtaba Rizvi - English
The Ghadir event and its significance
Seventy days before his demise, when Prophet Muhammad (PBUH&HF) 1 was returning to Medina after his last pilgrimage to Mecca, he reached the pond of Khum
(Ghadir Khum) near Juhfa. It was the 18th of the month of Dhul-Hijja of the year 10 AH (March 15, 632 AD). By this time, the Prophet (PBUH&HF) had conveyed
all of the divine commandments to his nation except for the formal and explicit public announcement of his divinely appointed successors as the leaders,
guardians, and guides for the believers for all days to come.
By the order of Allah, the Prophet (PBUH&HF) stopped at the pond of Khum, gathered the crowd of pilgrims, and delivered his last universal speech. In this
sermon, he presented his last religious instruction which finalized the last divine religion and made Islam the perfect religion in the sight of Allah. Imam
Muhammad al-Baqir (PBUH), the fifth Imam and successor of the Prophet (PBUH&HF) said: âThe last obligatory duty that Allah sent down was al-Walaya(adherence
to the guardian assigned by Allah). Then, He sent down the verse: âToday, I completed your religionâŠâ1 once the Messenger of Allah established it in Juhfa
area.â
This message was the most unique in the entire mission of the Prophet (PBUH&HF) due to the revelation of Verse 67, Chapter 5 of the Holy Quran before his
speech. In this revelation, Allah warned His Messenger that failing to deliver this last message would nullify his entire mission. This unprecedented warning
proves that this last message contained the most important religious commandment of Allah for the Muslim nation.
Moreover, the contents of this last message were so crucial to the faith that the Prophet (PBUH&HF) emphatically required all those who directly or
indirectly heard the sermon of Ghadir Khum to convey it to people who were not aware of its details, and parents to convey it to their children for all
generations to come. Hence, this sermon addresses all Muslim generations of the world until the Day of Judgement. This emphasis naturally implies that
the content of this message has a vital role in the future of the Muslims, their spiritual health, and their felicity in the Hereafter.
The main issue that the Prophet (PBUH&HF) addressed in his speech in Ghadir Khum was that Allah appointed Ali Ibn Abi Talib (PBUH) as the guardian (Wali),
the master (Mawla), the leader (Imam), and the commander (Amir) of all believing men and women, the deputy and the executor of his affairs (Wasi), and his
successor (Khalifa). His sayings and commands should be preferred over the opinions of all others in every matter. Obeying him is obeying Allah, and
disobeying him is disobeying Allah. Whoever follows him (and his sayings) is a believer under the guardianship of Allah, and whoever turns away from him (or
his sayings) is a disbeliever under the guardianship of Satan.
Guardianship (al-Walaya) expresses a bilateral relation between the guardian and the people. Observing al-Walaya by people means adhering to the guardian and
acknowledging his authority by heart, tongue, and action. On the other hand, the action of al-Walaya by the guardian means offering protection from evil,
spiritual assistance, care, support, and guidance for his adherents. A divinely appointed guardian guards his adherents from misguidance, spiritual
destruction, wrongdoing, and sin as much as they adhere to him and his commands. Establishing al-Walaya has been the ultimate goal of religion and the fruit
of the entire efforts of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH&HF) during his mission.
One who submits to Allahâs representative and adheres to him has indeed acknowledged Allahâs authority and guardianship and is a true monotheist in obeying
Allah. Acknowledging the guardianship of the leaders that Allah appointed and submitting to them is the greatest pillar of faith. It safeguards the followers
from the wrath and punishment of Allah. Imam Muhammad al-Baqir (PBUH) said: âIslam is established by five things: prayer, charity, fasting, pilgrimage, and
al-Walaya (adhering to the guardians authorized by Allah). None (among them) was called for as (emphatically as) al-Walaya was called for. However, people
accepted the first four and abandoned al-Walaya.
People who refused to submit to the leaders that Allah appointed resemble the Satan who refused to submit to the viceregent of Allah, Adam (PBUH), and
consequently, became an outcast and went under the curse of Allah forever as mentioned in the Holy Quran.1 It is narrated that Imam al-Ridha (PBUH) said:
âThe similitude of the believers in accepting the guardianship of the Commander of the Believers (Ali) on the day of Ghadir Khum is that of the angels in
prostrating before Adam (i.e., submitting to him), and the similitude of those who turned away from the guardianship of the Commander of the Believers on the
day of Ghadir is that of the devil (Iblis).
In one of his speeches on the anniversary of the day of Ghadir, Imam Ali (PBUH) said: âAllah does not accept the faith (of an individual) except after he
acknowledges the guardianship of whom He required. He does not arrange the means of His obedience (for an individual) except after he adheres to His ropes
and the ropes of His authorized people. Thus, Allah sent down to His Prophet (PBUH&HF) on the day of the large trees1 that which explained His will for His
sincere and chosen servants. Allah commanded him to convey (the message) without being concerned about the hypocrites or the deviants, and guaranteed him
protection against their evil... By that, Allah completed His religion, and delighted the eyes of His Prophet (PBUH&HF), and the believers. Some of you
witnessed this event and some received its news. This (appointment) concluded the beautiful word of Allah for those who observe patience⊠â

Deep Inside the Heart
Agha Ali Reza Panahian
The prophet David (âa) asked God, âGod, who is at the same level with me in Heaven?â God replied, âThe daughter of âso and soâ is at the same level with you in Heaven.â The prophet became curious about what this girl had that she was at the same level in Heaven? He got the address and went to that family.
He asked, âWhat good points do you have? What worships acts do you do? How vigilant are you?â She mentioned some of her normal deeds. The prophet David (âa) said, âNo, these are not things to cause you to be at the same level of the prophet of your time. Tell me more for me to understand.â
She said, âI am very optimistic about God.â The prophet David (âa) approved and said, âThis is what can cause a person to be at the same level of the prophet of his or her time.â God says, âI look deep inside My servant. Deep inside is the part of a personâs heart, which is hidden and which a person may not be aware of himself in many cases.â God says, âLet Me see what is deep inside his heart? Whatever it is, Iâll deal with him based on that.â
God determines our future for the next year on the Night of Power. How does He determine our future fate? One of the very important factors is to be optimistic about God.
Can a person pray or make up a missed prayer on the Day of Judgement? Can a person take money with himself to pay for his debts on the Day of Judgment? Can he give charity there? Can he do anything to gain some reward? There is one deed, which is effective on the Day of Judgement, and that is being optimistic and having hope in God.
After calculating a personâs deeds, they want to send him to Hell. He constantly looks behind himself. The Almighty God says, âBring My servant. Why is he looking behind himself?â He says, âGod, I didnât think You would punish me.â God replies, âI have forgiven you now because you were optimistic about Me.â
Being optimistic is effective on the Day of Judgment! God replies, âI have forgiven you now because you were optimistic about Me.â Being optimistic is effective on the Day of Judgment!
God make us Your best servants on earth during this Month of Ramadan. Do you know why we donât pray like this or cry for this? Because we say, âThis is too difficult. Forget it. Itâs not that easy.â
This is being disappointed. This is not something strange. âI donât feel like it.â Do you know why? Because, you donât believe you will be given such a thing. âIs God this kind? No!â This is an obvious insult, having doubts about the extent of Godâs Kindness. This is being disappointed.
Where does our regret start from? It starts from each good deed that we werenât able to do. We will blame ourselves and say, âI didnât want it. I wasnât optimistic. I didnât have hope that God would give that to me. So, He didnât.â
Being optimistic, hopeful, and not becoming disappointed are not just moods. In practice, they have effect. If you say itâll happen, it will happen.
She suddenly said, âI am very optimistic about God.â The prophet David (âa) agreed and said, âThis is what can cause a person to be at the same level of the prophet of his or her time.â

The Strategic Role of a Bad Trait
Sometimes there is only one bad trait, but it causes a person to go to Hell. Very simple. It makes a society wretched. This means this evil has a strategic role. Some evils in general have a strategic role. For example, jealousy is strategic.
Amru Aasâs son narrated, âOnce, I was sitting in the Mosque. The Prophet of God (s) said, âWhoever wants to look at a person that will go to Heaven, look at this old man who will enter now. He will definitely go to Heaven.ââ
Amru Aasâs son was a sensitive and astute person. He wondered about him?! He was young. He came to the old manâs house and said, âI have had an argument with my father and donât have a place. Will you let me stay in your house?â The old man accepted.
He stayed there for three days and watched him day and night. He saw that he was a regular person. He couldnât find anything special in him! He prayed, slept, ate, worked, etc. He didnât recite the Qurâan or fast in a special way.
After three days, he told the old man, âIâm sorry. I lied that I said I had an argument with my father. I wanted to watch you closely to see how you are. And I saw that you are a very normal person.â The old man responded, âWas I supposed to be abnormal?â He replied, âThe Prophet (s) said that you will go to Heaven. You have something that we donât.â The old man replied, âThatâs very kind of the Prophet to say so. I donât know.â He asked, âTalk some about your mood and work.â
The old man replied, âI am like âthis and that.ââ Suddenly the old man said, âIf God gives a virtue to anybody, it isnât hard for me.â I say, âHow nice. Good for him. How beautiful.ââ Amru Aasâs son said, âThis is what we are unable to tolerate.â I am unable to tolerate for God to give something to someone with no reason. I say, âWhat about me?!â
Some traits are strategic. Like the trait of jealousy. Actually, what is the first negative trait that is born in a human being? Jealousy starts from the age of three. It bothers the child too. You should have children very close in age, not very close, at least three years between them, so that this child feels jealous, becomes bothered, and learns to pass on it. You vaccinate him or her.
âThis is how it is! You have come into this world to pass the test of jealousy. With your small brother or sister, see how it is. Feel what Cain, Talha, Zubayr, Muâawiah, and Umar Saâd felt. The story started from here. Fight! Fight with your jealousy my little one.â Let your child practice and you help him or her. This is the way it is. Is it possible for God not to tell us to work on such a strategic trait like jealousy every day? Is it possible?
What part of the Qurâan is obligatory to recite every day? Chapter âHamd.â â(Lord), guide us to the right path, the path of those to whom You have granted blessings.â (Qurâan 1:6-7) You didnât feel bad?! God has granted them blessings. What about you? âNo, guide me to their path. Itâs not a problem that He has granted them blessings. Iâm not jealous.â Good job! Good job! ââŠthe path of those to whom You have granted blessings,â means that Iâm not jealous. Actually, Iâm humble in another way too. Not only Iâm not jealous or miserly, but Iâm humble in another way too. What is that? âGuide me to their path.â
Jealousy is the basic theme of Godâs test about religion. Guardianship shows itself there. One of the miracles of our religion is the religious mourning ceremonies for Aba Abdillah al-Husayn, which work on our most basic, strategic, bad trait. In each meeting, your jealousy towards the âGuardiansâ will be struck down so that you wonât become like Cain. It brings us out from being like Cain.
When they talk about Abelâs tragedies, your heart softens and warms so that you wonât become Cain. May I be sacrificed for Husayn (âa) and his children that they were all beaten so much to create this humbleness in us. You will see on the Day of Judgment how much Husayn (âa) has struggled for us. This was Godâs design! This Able (Husayn) that we burn for helps us not to become Cain.
