Tel Aviv has imposed a crippling blockade on the Gaza Strip since 2007, which has caused a decline in the standard of living, unprecedented levels of unemployment, and unrelenting poverty.

A high-rise building has collapsed in the Iran capital Tehran after a fire engulfed its top floors. The fire broke out at the 17-story structure in downtown Tehran on Thursday morning. Scores of firefighters were deployed to battle the blaze. However, their efforts remained futile. Many people including firefighters are trapped. Thirty-eight people are also reported to have been injured in the incident. The 50-year-old building was among the first high-rises built in Tehran. It included a shopping center and clothing workshops, which had been evacuated. A report from the Palestine Center published this year identifies three potential causes for settler violence; it\'s response to Israeli government actions; it\'s a product of demographics and security arrangements; it is a response to Palestinian violence. The report also states that while Israeli settler violence is not new, the extent and frequency with which it is perpetrated today is new.

Australian officials are warning that wildfires in New South Wales could merge to create a mega-fire. They say 58 blazes are still alight in the state, with over a dozen reportedly out of control. A thick white smoke haze is now threatening Sydney. People have been warned to stay indoors and avoid exercising. A state of emergency has been declared in New South Wales since yesterday. Temperatures are expected to rise which will make firefighting more difficult. Hot and dry winds are also expected to intensify in the coming days. The bushfires that started on Thursday have caused massive damage in the Blue Mountains area. More than 200 homes have been destroyed and thousands of people forced out of their their homes. Firefighters say this is the most serious wildfire emergency in 40 years.

More tensions along the border between India and Pakistan; at least a dozen people have been injured as the two sides exchange fire over the Kashmir border. Several children were among those injured. The fresh round of violence started at border posts along the frontier on Thursday. Pakistani officials have accused Indian troops of initiating the violence by firing along the frontier and injuring two people. Similarly, India has accused the Pakistani side of violating the ceasefire by firing mortars on at least 50 Indian border posts. Skirmishes along the border have intensified despite the first face-to-face meeting between the Pakistani prime minister and his Indian counterpart in New York last month.

In Bangladesh, clashes between police and protesters during a nationwide strike have led to the death of at least five people. Police say they opened fire on opposition supporters in the western town of Nagarkanda after they attacked police forces with bricks. The opposition has launched a three-day strike, asking the government to step down before the upcoming general elections. The Bangladesh Nationalist Party-- B-N-P, led by Khaleda Zia says the ruling party should step aside ahead of the January polls. The opposition wants the elections to be held under a neutral caretaker government, to prevent vote rigging. Earlier attempts to cancel the strike failed. On Friday, clashes broke out between supporters of the opposition and the ruling party across the country, leaving several people dead and hundreds injured.
