The European Union has expanded its sanctions against Iran, freezing assets and adding more officials to a visa blacklist. It cites 'serious human rights violations' for the measures - which follow other similar penalties over the Islamic republic's nuclear programme. The U.S. has just drawn up a list of countries which are to be cut-off from the American financial system - if they don't reduce Iranian oil imports within 6 months. Meanwhile, Israel says its threat of a military strike on Iran is stopping it from building a suspected nuclear bomb. Tehran maintains its atomic programme is for peaceful energy purposes only. But the U.S. is against an imminent attack on the Islamic state - believing it would drag the whole region into war. For more RT talks to Middle East expert, Professor Seyed Mohammad Marandi, from Beirut.

[13 June 2012] West seeks to sabotage P5+1 Iran talks Jeff Steinberg - English
EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton says the group of six major world powers (P5+1) is ready to hold talks on Tehran's 5-point proposal in the forthcoming negotiations with Iran in Moscow. In a phone conversation with Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council Saeed Jalili on Monday, Ashton said the P5+1 - comprising of Britain, China, France, Russia, and the United States plus Germany - is ready to discuss Tehran's proposal. Stressing the necessity of achieving success in the upcoming talks in the Russian capital, Ashton expressed hope that both sides could find common grounds based on Iran's proposal and the P5+1 package.
Press TV has conducted an interview with Jeff Steinberg, from the Executive Intelligence Review, to hear his opinions on this issue.

[13 July 2012] Is Islamic banking applicable in today economy - English
After the baking crisis of 2008 and the collapse of financial markets, doubts have emerged on the capability of the modern financial model to sustain a healthy economy. With the failure of both capitalism and communism, some experts, especially in Muslim countries are looking at Islam to find an alternative model. Islam's strong prohibition of usury (Riba) in particular is seen as a new foundation for a healthy banking system and consequently a sustainable and fairer economy. Other Islamic institutions like zakat and waqf (endowments) have potential economical functions.
In recent years Islamic Banking for example, has been tried with some success in some of Muslim countries and even in Britain. British Financial Services Authority estimates the assets controlled by Islamic banks at the global level to be $200-500bn which is growing at a pace of 10-15% per year. With prospect of about 12 million Muslims living in EU, Islamic financial and economical model is a feasible solution for the future. This week's Islam and Life asks: Are the principles of Islamic banking applicable in today's economy?

An activist says that the West has \'profoundly lost its way\' in terms of the freedom of speech, to a degree that they take some alternative channels off air but at the same time continue to air degrading channels. A group of Spanish lawmakers have heaped scorn on their government for pulling the plug on Iranian channels Press TV and Hispan TV under the influence of Zionist lobbies in the United States. In a letter, the United Left deputies asked the Spanish government to explain if Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Garcia-Margallo had discussed the ban on Iranian networks in his meeting with the Zionist lobbies in October 2012. An overwhelming majority of 72 percent of respondents to a recent Press TV poll from across the globe said Iran\'s media are attacked by Zionist lobbies for their revelation of truth about Israel and the West. The ban on Press TV and Hispan TV in Spain followed a similar move by France\'s Eutelsat company, which had already taken several Iranian satellite channels and radio stations off the air, claiming that the channels were removed because of \"a wider interpretation of EU regulations.\"
To shed more light on the issue at hand, Press TV\'s The Debate program has conducted an interview with William Spring, human rights activist from London, Caleb Maupin, with the International Action Center from New York City and Alon Ben-Meir, with the NYU Center for Global Affairs from New York City.
