A UN panel has urged Myanmar to stop Buddhist violence against Rohingya Muslims but the resolution has seen opposition from an unlikely source: The party of Nobel Peace laureate Aung San Suu Chee.
In its resolution, the UN General Assembly\'s human rights committee has called on Myanmar to give the Rohingya minority equal access to citizenship. But the demand apparently didn\'t sit well with the West\'s democracy icon Suu Chee, whose party accused the UN of interfering in Myanmar\'s internal affairs. Buddhist violence against Rohingya which is said to have the state backing has become routine in Myanmar. It\'s left hundreds dead and sent another 240-thousand fleeing their homes. But Suu Chee has had little to say about Rohingya rights. And she even declined to meet with the Organization of the Islamic Cooperation delegation visiting Myanmar this week to look into the plight of Muslims.

Myanmar \'s Rakhine state remains extremely tense after several outbreaks of violence between Buddhist and Muslim communities since 2012 that have killed scores and displaced some 140,000 people, mainly from the Rohingya minority. And it appears the bloodshed continues into the new year, even though Myanmar has opened itself to the West:
Are the govt. claims of democratic reforms just window dressing?
In this edition of the debate , we\'ll discuss why this violence against the Muslims continue, often with the govt. forces present, the true intentions of the West in Myanmar, and the role of Nobel Peace Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi.

[2] Plight of Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar with George Galloway - 27 july 2012 - English
The government of Myanmar refuses to recognize Rohingyas, who it claims are not natives and classifies them as illegal migrants, although they have lived in the country for generations. Myanmar's President Thein Sein said on July 19 that the "only solution" to the plight of Rohingya Muslims is to send the country's nearly one million Muslims -- which the UN says is one of the world's most persecuted minorities -- to refugee camps run by United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).
However, the UN refugee agency has snubbed the idea of setting up refugee camps to accommodate the Rohingyas. "We will send them away if any third country would accept them," Sein added. "This is what we are thinking is the solution to the issue." The UN says decades of discrimination have left the Rohingyas stateless, with Myanmar implementing restrictions on their movement and withholding land rights, education and public services.
