The polling stations for the Iranian presidential election opened in Germany to give Iranians living outside their home country the chance to cast their vote. More than 100,000 Iranians live in Germany and despite Friday being a working day here, many came to the Iranian Embassy in Berlin to vote.
Polling stations were set up in Berlin, the consulates in Hamburg, Munich and Frankfurt as well as in Bonn, the former German capital. Eligible voters taking part in the election chose one of the six candidates to succeed Mahmoud Ahmadinejad as president of the Islamic Republic of Iran. And although they might be far away from their hometown, they feel the responsibility to take part in this key event.
The polling station in the Iranian Embassy in Berlin remains open for the day allowing Iranians to freely cast their vote and contribute to electing the candidate of their choice.
Many Iranians living in Germany have used their right to vote in Iran\'s presidential election in the five polling stations set up all over the country and now they curiously await the result.

The European Union\'s Justice Commissioner says time is ripe for a QUOTE strong and united stand on data protection against US surveillance operations.
Viviane Reding called on European states to adopt a data protection law for facing the US as a strong and united entity. This comes amid new reports that the US has been spying on its European allies. Germany has summoned the US ambassador to Berlin over reports that Washington had monitored German Chancellor Angela Merkel\'s cell phone. Merkel herself has called the U-S president to demand immediate clarification. She\'s also set to discuss Washington\'s snooping in Europe with French President Francois Hollande during a two-day EU summit in Brussels. The White House says Obama has assured Merkel that her cell is not being tapped.
