Desde el triunfo de la Revolución Islámica de Irán, se han celebrado 10 elecciones presidenciales y 6 personas han ocupado este cargo: Abol Hasan Bani Sadr, Mohamad Ali Rayai, Ayatolá Seyed Ali Jamenei, Akbar Hashemi Rafsanyani, Mohamad Jatami y Mahmud Ahmadineyad. Dos de ellos, es decir, Bani Sadr y Rayai no llegaron a cumplir sus periodos de mandatos. El primero fue destituido por el Parlamento por alejarse de las metas de la Revolución Islámica y los requisitos que debe tener como presidente. El segundo tampoco pudo cumplir con su periodo de mandato. Murió en un atentado con bomba perpetrado por un miembro infiltrado de la banda terrorista Muyahedin-e Jalq (MKO, por sus siglas en inglés), contra la oficina del primer ministro, Mohamad Yavad Bahonar, quien también perdió la vida. Una de las elecciones presidenciales multitudinarias de Irán fue la del 2009, donde el 84.83 % de los ciudadanos aptos para votar, acudieron a las urnas y además de elegir a su propio candidato manifestaron su apoyo a la República Islámica de Irán. In late June, The World Heritage committee of the United Nation\'s Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization, UNESCO, inscribed the Iranian Golestan Palace in its World Heritage List. This is the first Iranian monument among the other 15, which has been located in the heart of the capital, Tehran. The palace was built in Tehran in the 16th century during the reign of Safavid King Tahmasb. The site received its most characteristic features following extensions in the 19th century, when the ruling Qajar family selected the palace as the royal residence and seat of power. The palace was rebuilt to its current form in 1865 by Haji Abol-hasan Mimar Navai. Iran\'s Foreign Ministry has strongly condemned the assassination of one of its diplomats in Yemen as an inhuman and terrorist act. The ministry has said in a statement that the murder of Abol-Qassem Assadi further revealed the violent and extremist nature of Takfiri militants. Iran has summoned the Yemeni chargé d\'affaires to protest the killing. It has promised to pursue the case and bring the perpetrators to justice. Assadi who was shot by gunmen in Sana\'a died of his wounds on Saturday. Six members of a terrorist group first tried to kidnap Iran\'s commercial attaché but opened fire on him, when they faced resistance.

Iran says the terrorists who assassinated an Iranian diplomat in Yemen have been identified. Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian stated that a committee has been set up to closely pursue the issue of the murder of Abol Ghasem Asadi. He also expressed hope that the Yemeni government would announce the names and nationalities of the killers in the near future. Asadi was killed in the Yemeni capital San\'a last Saturday by an unknown group. Amir Abdollahian also mentioned the case of an Iranian diplomat who was abducted in Yemen several months ago, adding that serious efforts are being made to obtain the release of Nour Ahmad Nikbakht.
