Egypt detains 154 opposition members
The Egyptian government has detained 154 members of the country's largest opposition group, the Muslim Brotherhood, ahead of general elections.
According to the Muslim Brotherhood, the arrests were made in 17 different governorates just days after the group said it would field independent candidates in the upcoming parliamentary elections.
Egyptian security forces, however, say they detained the opposition members over alleged plans to cause disturbance.
The group's lawyer Abdul Monem Abdul Maqsoud told reporters in Cairo on Sunday that 70 detainees remain in custody but the others were released after questioning, DPA reported.
Abdul Maqsoud said the arrests were aimed at spreading fear among opposition supporters to keep people from joining the election campaign.
Meanwhile, prominent Egyptian opposition leader Mohamed ElBaradei earlier called for a boycott of the elections.
The Muslim Brotherhood has defended its decision to field candidates.
"We participate for Egypt's sake," Muslim Brotherhood spokesman Essam el-Erian said last week. "Participation is the best way to expose the corruption of the regime."
Independent Muslim Brotherhood candidates won nearly a fifth of the People's Assembly seats in the 2005 general elections.

After years of brutal occupation, Washington was finally forced to sign the Status of Forces Agreement with Baghdad, which stipulates that all US forces would be completely out of Iraq by the end of December 2011.
According to the latest opinion polls, the majority of Iraqi people oppose the idea of US soldiers staying in their country beyond the December deadline, but the American regime wants to stay using the weakness of Iraqi army and security forces as pretext. Under the same pretext, US soldiers continue to carry out home raids and arrests.

The Lebanese government confirms the arrest of the leader of an al-Qaeda-linked group involved in the recent bombing outside the Iranian embassy in Beirut.
Lebanon\\\'s defense minister says Majed al-Majed, who headed the Abdullah Azzam Brigades, was captured by the country\\\'s intelligence service in Beirut. It\\\'s not clear yet when the arrest took place. Majed is a high-profile terrorist wanted by the U-S and other countries. He had earlier traveled to Syria to pledge his allegiance to the notorious al-Nusra Front, which is fighting against the Syrian government. His group claimed responsibility for November\\\'s twin bombings that killed about two dozen people outside the Iranian embassy. The arrest is seen as a major achievement for the Lebanese army, which has seen a series of suspicious bombings and assassinations in the country in recent years.
