[Audio][02] Distortions of Ashura - by Martyr Ayatullah Murtada Mutahhari - English

Now we shall take up the different forms of tahrif.
There are various kinds of tahrif, the most important of which are tahrif in words and tahrif of meaning. Tahrif of wording occurs when the literal form of a statement is changed. For instance, when words and phrases are deleted or added to a statement or the sequence of sentences is altered in such a manner as to change its meaning. In this case tahrif occurs in the outward form and wording of a statement
Tahrif of meaning occurs when one does not change the words, which remain in their original form, but the statement is interpreted in a manner that is contrary to the intent of its speaker. It is interpreted in such a manner as to express one\\\\\\\'s own intent, not that of its author.
The Noble Qur\\\\\\\'an employs the term tahrif specifically in relation to the Jews. A study of history shows that they have been the champions of tahrif throughout the course of history. I don\\\\\\\'t know what kind of race this is that has such an amazing penchant for misrepresenting facts! Accordingly they always take up professions in which they can distort and misrepresent events. From what I have heard, the world\\\\\\\'s well-known news agencies, which are perpetually quoted by the radios and newspapers, are exclusively in the hands of the Jews. Why? Because they can report the events as they wish. How amazing is the Qur\\\\\\\'an\\\\\\\'s statement about them! This characteristic of the Jews, the tendency for tahrif, is considered a racial trait by the Qur\\\\\\\'an. In one of the verses of the Sura al-baqarah, the Qur\\\\\\\'an declares:
Are you then eager that they (i.e. the Jews) should believe in you, while a party of them had heard Allah\\\\\\\'s word, and then consciously misinterpreted it, after they had understood it, and did that knowingly? (2:75) [1]
This means, \\\\\\\'O Muslims, have you pinned your hopes on their telling you the truth? They are the same people who would go along with Moses, and hear God\\\\\\\'s pronouncements. But by the time they returned to their people\\\\\\\'s midst to recount what they had heard, they would twist it out of shape.\\\\\\\' The tahrif that they would carry out was not for the reason that they did not understand and so altered what they reported. No! They are an intelligent people and they understand matters the issues very well. But despite the fact that they understand what they have heard they would recount them in a distorted manner for the people. This is what tahrif is, that is, distorting and twisting things out of their original shape-and they carried out tahrif even in Divine scriptures!
In this context, in most of the cases the Qur\\\\\\\'an uses the very term tahrif or expresses the matter in some other manner. However, the exegetes have pointed out that the Qur\\\\\\\'anic reference to tahrif in this context includes tahrif in wording as well as in meaning. That is, some of the instances of corruption that have occurred [in the scriptures at the hands of the Jews] relating to the wording and some of them relate to the meanings and interpretation. As this involves a digression from my main topic, I do not wish to discuss this matter any further.

Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei has warned against plots hatched by enemies to hijack the Muslim world\'s achievements, urging Muslim nations to remain vigilant.
Nations in Muslim countries must be vigilant and cautious not to permit enemies to hijack their victories, said Ayatollah Khamenei in an address to massive crowds of worshipers during the Eid al-Fitr prayers at Tehran University on Wednesday.
Ayatollah Khamenei pointed to “big events” which have taken place in the Muslim world during the recent months and added that the world is going through an important chapter in its history at the current juncture.
The Leader stated that Muslims are currently present in the scene and emphasized that the puppets of the United States and Israel are falling in the region “one after another.”
However, issues have not been settled; this is the start of a long path, the Leader pointed out.

Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali KhameneiLeader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei has agreed to a request from Iran\'s judiciary chief to pardon a number of prisoners on the occasion of Eid al-Fitr.
Ayatollah Khamenei on Tuesday agreed to pardon and grant reduction in jail terms to a number of prisoners, the Leader\'s website reported.
The decision was in response to a letter from Iran\'s Judiciary Chief Ayatollah Sadeq Amoli Larijani asking for clemency for the remaining jail terms and financial penalties of prisoners.
On Saturday, Tehran Prosecutor General Abbas Jafari Dolatabadi announced that Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei had ordered the early release or a reduction in the prison sentences of 1,218 prisoners convicted of security-related crimes.
Dolatabadi stated that the prisoners who had been granted clemency had repented of the crimes they committed.
The Leader\'s decision came ahead of Eid al-Fitr, which marks the end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.
Ramadan is the ninth month on the Islamic calendar when Muslims fast from dawn to dusk and refrain from eating, drinking, smoking, and indulging in anything that is in excess or ill-natured.
Muslims believe Ramadan to be an auspicious month for the revelations of God to humankind, given the belief that it was in Ramadan when the first verses of the Holy Qur\'an were revealed to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

550 Palestinians were released from Israeli prisons on Sunday evening in the second and final phase of a prisoner swap deal between Hamas and Israel where 1,027 Palestinian prisoners were released by Israel
in exchange for captured Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit.
The freed prisoners were received by thousands of cheering family members and friends gathered in Ramallah to receive them. Out of the 550 freed prisoners, two are from Jerusalem al-Quds, 506 are from other parts of the West Bank, 40 from Gaza, and 2 are Jordanian. Also, Israel released 55 out of the 164 under-the-age-of-18-years-old Palestinian prisoners and 6 out of the 11 female prisoners.
Before the release of the prisoners, confrontations broke out between anticipating Palestinian youth and the Israeli occupation forces in front of the Israeli Ofar prison, where the West bank prisoners were released from. 25 Palestinians and 1 Israeli soldier were wounded.
400 out of the 550 prisoners released on Sunday have finished two-thirds of their sentences.

These scenes outside the Israeli Embassy in London have become a common sight. It is here that London witnessed an outpouring of grief over the attack on the Mavi Marmara earlier this year, and here people now stand to commemorate the anniversary of Operation Cast Lead in Gaza, which began to this day two years ago.
Over 1400 Gazans were killed in that onslaught - few have forgotten. Protests like this are taking place around the country this week.
2010 comes to a close after months of brewing anger over the British government's domestic austerity measures - this is matched by equally heightened disillusionment over the Middle East process.
Two years ago as Gaza was being bombarded, protests here turned violent - and dozens were later arrested and given jail sentences. This sent shockwaves through the Pro-Palestinian movement here.
The protest in London has come to an end now and the organisers and fairly happy with the turnout they saw today. The end of December is a sleepy, holiday season in the United Kingdom - a time when very little of political significance takes place here but with Operation Cast lead's anniversary falling at this time each year, it will never be the same again. An Egyptian court has sentenced 26 people to death for plotting attacks on ships in the Suez Canal.
The men, who were tried in their absence, were charged while in custody. The court accuses the defendents of founding and leading a terrorist cell, which wanted to disrupt the major shipping route. It also referred the verdict to the Grand Mufti of Cairo, who now has to validate the sentences. The recent spate of violence has rocked Egypt, after former president Mohamed Morsi was ousted by the military in July, and placed under arrest. The latest ruling comes as another court in the country sentenced over 2-hundred Morsi supporters to prison over a variety of charges on Tuesday.

The crackdown on dissent continues in Bahrain where a court has sentenced 13 people to jail for allegedly trying to kill policemen. Twelve of these Bahrainis received a 10-year jail term. Another person was given a three- year sentence. They had all taken part in an anti-regime demonstration.
In a separate case at another court in the Bahraini capital Manama, a policeman was acquitted of attempting to murder a protester because of what was called insufficient proof. The legal proceedings against protesters have been described as show trials by rights activists. The Bahraini regime has harshly cracked down on pro-democracy demonstrations which began in the Persian Gulf kingdom in early 2011.

[13 April 2012] Bahrain uprising - Middle East Today - Presstv - English
Rights activist Abdulhadi al-Khawaja's family is fear for his life in Bahraini jails. Khawaja, the co-founder and former president of the Bahrain Center for Human Rights, began a hunger strike in early February to protest against the life sentence he received last year and Manama's ongoing crackdown on peaceful protests. Amnesty International has also called for the 'immediate and unconditional release' of al-Khawaja, considering him a 'prisoner of conscience, detained solely for exercising his right to freedom of expression.' Hunger strikes seem to have an effect on the Israeli authorities who are holding thousands of Arabs and Palestinians in jails without trial. Why does it seem harder for Bahraini activists in jail with unjust sentences to get their rights? What are the humanitarian conditions which stipulate holding a UNSC meeting to discuss a crisis in a country?
