*MUST WATCH* Ghadeer, Valayat & Valayat e Faqih - PressTV Documentary - English

On the15th of November 2011, Iran celebrated the day Shai Muslims believe the prophet of Islam held Imam Ali\'s hand up high, and announced to all those present that he would be his successor.
At the age of 14 Imam Ali was the first man to accept the Prophet Mohammad\'s invitation to Islam. Little did he know he would be the first to take on the responsibility of guiding the Muslim community after the prophet? That was 14 hundred years ago, but today the image of that pivotal moment in Islamic history, is still a tear jerker for Shia Muslims everywhere.
The Al-Ghadir Eid is known as the Eid of Velayate. Velayat means guardianship. The guardian of the Muslim world is known as the Vali Faghih, a unifying figure to which Muslims can refer for Islamic guidance.
He is a leader, but like jurisprudence, can decide how modern-day issues should be dealt with. For decades, this vital element of Islamic society was absent in Iran and the world. But in 1979, centuries of monarchical rule came to an end in Iran, via a revolution led by Imam Khomeini, and realized by the millions that rallied behind him as their leader.
Months later in a referendum the people voted for an Islamic Republic, a unique form of governance that would revolve around religion and the will of the people.
The Iranian nation voted for a constitution that called on the nation to choose a Vali Faghih via an expediency council made up of learned religious clerics that again, the people appoint. Choosing the leader of a people, not just a nation, is no easy task.
He must be a man who not only has all the qualifications to make those big decisions, but also have certain character traits as well. He must be just, brave, virtuous, and tactful. He must be an Islamic scholar, and have the ability to make religious decrees.
Iran has had a Vali faghih for 32 years now, and because Iran is the only country to have such a system of governance, it\'s not very well known or understood in the global community. In this segment of Iran Today, we will be calling on the experts to give us a deeper understanding of the political aspect of Vali Faghih, how he is chosen and his responsibilities.

The Islamic Republic of Iran successfully launches its second satellite christened Rassad (Observation) into the earth's orbit.
The satellite, which is the country's first such imaging device, was launched by the Safir-e-Rassad satellite carrier on Wednesday thanks to Iranian aerospace scientists and experts' endeavor, IRNA reported.
Despite its 15.3-kilogram weight, which puts it under the category of the micro-satellites, Rassad has all features of a big satellite.
It has undergone all the stages required for its designing, manufacturing, assembly, test and preparation for launch inside the country.
It will orbit the earth at an altitude of 260 kilometers 15 times every 24 hours.
Its mission is to take images of the earth's surface and relay them to the earth-based stations together with telemetric information.
The satellite is equipped with solar panels and uses solar energy to work.
Iran launched its first domestically-produced satellite Omid (Hope) in 2009, which made it the ninth country to develop satellite launch capability.
Tehran also plans to launch the country's first manned mission to space by 2019.

Iran\'s foreign minister says the US had an illusion that it could totally dismantle Tehran\'s nuclear facilities and this illusion had thwarted any possible deal.
Zarif says there\'s still deep mistrust between the two sides and both need to work to build trust. At a meeting with the presence of the IAEA chief, Zarif also noted that it would be a big mistake to assume Iran has participated in talks because of sanctions. He says when sanctions were first imposed only 200 centrifuges were working, but now Tehran has 19-thousand centrifuges. Zarif says nuclear technology is now localized in Iran, and Tehran does not need the help of other countries. For his part, the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency Yukia Amano said Tehran is meeting its commitments within the framework of the Geneva agreement.

The city of Detroit, Michigan made headlines last month when police reported that there were 13 people shot in 24 hours. But other cities in the US are also starting to see an increase in violent crime. The surge in violence comes as the FBI releases figures that indicate that the crimes are part of a nationwide trend. The FBI figures suggest the overall increase in violence is due to a surge in crimes committed in larger cities-- after six years of steady declines. Violent crimes include murder, rape, robbery and aggravated assaults. Nationally, those crime rates have edged up 1.2 percent year-over-year, according to the FBI\'s Preliminary Annual Uniform Crime Report. The largest increases happened in cities with populations of between 500,000 and one million people. This is where violent crime rose by 3.7 percent, including a 12.5 percent spike in murder rates.

[06 June 2012] 'China supports Syria's sovereignty' - English
June Security Council President Li Baodong of China laid out a busy schedule for the month that involves meetings on Sudan -- Guinea Bissau -- Libya -- and other issues.
Syria will be a big priority -- he said -- and he was philosophical about the challenges it presents -- especially in the wake of the Houla massacre.
To answer his own question -- Li says the Council will have to rely on information from UN people on the ground in Syria -- since all sides are blaming the other for the massacre.
Though some have named Syrian forces in the attack -- others refer to eyewitness accounts of armed gangs in pickup trucks committing the murders -- more than 100 -- two Fridays ago.

A new chapter was opened in Afghanistan on October 7, 2001, when the US warplanes began launching heavy strikes against the Taliban in different parts of Afghanistan.
Most Afghans were optimistic following the ouster of the Taliban government in the autumn of 2001. It was a new beginning for the people to build a new country under the US presence and its commitments to the people and government of Afghanistan.
Despite certain achievements, especially in the fields of democracy and women’s rights, many here believe that such achievements can never be compared to the amount of misery they have tolerated over the past years.
Uprooting terrorism in Afghanistan, poppy eradication and bringing stability were known as the top priorities of US and its allies after the overthrow of the Taliban regime.
However, the bitter story of over 3 million drug addicts in Afghanistan alongside the rising unemployment in the country show a big failure in these areas.
Let\'s not forget that 18 years of US-led NATO military presence in Afghanistan has also created an environment for terrorist groups to push the country into further chaos, as they name the US and its allies as their enemies.

Military offensives as a prelude to a diplomatic breakthrough: the Syrian army is shaking the self-confidence of western-backed insurgent groups by taking control of more lands. Areas which were previously in the hands of those trying to bring down the government of President Bashar al-Assad. Syrian forces are only few miles away from a very big gain: To take control of the western Qalamun region near the border with Lebanon. The following report tells us why the region is of high importance to Syria\'s future diplomatic efforts.

[10] Avoid the Places of Negligence | Sheikh Azhar Nasser | English

Live in big cities because they are collective centres of the Muslims. Avoid places of neglectfulness and wickedness and places where there are paucity of supporters for the obedience of Allah. Confine your thinking to matters which are helpful to you. Do not sit in the marketing centres because they are the meeting-places of Satan, and targets of mischiefs. Frequently look at those over whom you enjoy superiority because this is a way of giving thanks.
Do not undertake a journey on Friday until you have attended the prayers, except when you are going in the way of Allah, or in an excusable matter. Obey Allah in all your affairs because Allah\'s obedience has precedence over all other things. Deceive your heart into worshipping, persuade it and do not force it. Engage it (in worshipping) when it is free and merry, except as regards the obligations enjoined upon you, for they should not be neglected and must be performed at the five times. Be on guard lest death comes down upon you while you have fled away from your Lord in search of worldly pleasure. Avoid the company of the wicked because vice adjoins vice. Regard Allah as great, and love His lovers. Keep off anger because it is one large army from Satan\'s armies; and that is an end to the matter.

President Obama says US citizens are free to complain about what opponents call a big-brother style surveillance program, but that it\\\'s necessary to ward off terrorist attacks.
Do encroachments on privacy become acceptable, if according to Obama, they\\\'re modest?
Is PRISM only the next in a chain of secret US spying programs that activists say are pushing the country ever closer to a police state?
