The latest victim of Washington\'s spying scandal is Italy. Reports say America\'s spying agency snooped on everyday communications of Italians since 2010. The Italian spy watchdog called COPA-SIR recently learned that Italians too were under large scale monitoring by the US. Several Italian MPs have gone to Washington over the recent revelations. This comes as Mexican President Peno Nieto orders a probe into claims that the U-S spying agency hacked his and former President Felipe Calderon\'s emails. The allegations that Calderon was spied on from May 2010 were reported by German newspaper Der-Spiegel. The row coincides with reports that the NSA monitored millions of phone calls in France. The French government has called on the US to stop snooping on its citizens.

The US spying scandal has spread in scope and geography: The latest: The US National Security Agency has spied on Germans, including Chancellor Angela Merkel. Add to that, French diplomats in Washington and at the UN, not to mention Italy, Brazil, Mexico, and of course, the US itself. All based on leaks from former NSA contractor Edward Snowden, through Glen Greenwald, the outgoing Guardian journalist, who is feeding the material from Brazil.
In this debate, we will discuss what the repercussions of this US spying on its allies would be, and try to get to the bottom of how vast this spying has been, and whether the countries involved will do anything about it.

Iraq has been witnessing another bloody day. At least 54 people have been killed in a series of bombings.
Nearly a dozen explosives-laden cars went off in five different areas across Baghdad province. The explosives which targeted busy streets and markets in mainly Shia-populated districts left 42 people dead and 80 others injured. Elsewhere, 12 people-- among them soldiers, died when a bomb exploded in the city of Mosul, northwest of Baghdad. 20 others were also wounded. Sunday\'s blasts bring to over 620 the number of Iraqis who\'ve been killed so far this month. The Arab country has been hit by fresh violence since the beginning of 2013. Based on official estimates, more than 53-hundred people-- mostly civilians have lost their lives this year.

A territorial dispute between China and Japan seems to be far from over. In the latest development, Beijing has sent four coastguard vessels to the disputed islands in the East China Sea.
The move follows Beijing\'s mention of war after Tokyo approved a plan to shoot down Chinese drones if they fly over Japan\'s airspace. China has threatened to take firm countermeasures, if Japan fires on its drones. Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has accused China of trying to change the status quo in the region by force, adding that\'s why Tokyo is expected to take a leadership role over regional security issues. The relations between the two Asian powerhouses have been strained particularly over a group of disputed islands-- known as Senkaku in Japan and Diaoyu in China. Both countries claim sovereignty rights over the uninhabited resource-rich islands that are currently under Tokyo\'s control.

Latest media reports from Syria say insurgents fighting against the government plan to use a group of nuns kidnapped from their convent in the town of Ma\'loula as human shields.
The 12 Syrian and Lebanese nuns were kidnapped from a Greek Orthodox convent after the notorious al-Nusra Front militants took over parts of the Christian town. The nuns were then taken to Yabrud - a town under insurgent control north of Damascus. This, as Syrian forces have been deployed to the historic town to restore security there. The militants took over the town on Monday after rolling explosive-filled tires down the hills onto government forces, following three days of intense fighting. The kidnappings have drawn condemnation from the Vatican. Iran has also slammed the assault on the Christian religious site and called for the immediate release of the nuns. It\'s also urged the international community to take immediate action to prevent such criminal acts from taking place in the future.

Syrian media reports reject the opposition\'s latest accusation that government forces used chemicals in Damascus countryside.
Syrian media say claims of a gas attack by the army in al-Nabek are completely false and baseless. They\'re calling the allegation an attempt to justify the recent defeats of terrorist groups in their confrontations with army units. This comes a day after the foreign-backed opposition accused government troops of using poison gas. Back in August, hundreds of people lost their lives in a nerve gas attack around Damascus. Both sides blamed each other for the attack. Later on, the Syrian government agreed to give up the country\'s chemical weapons arsenal when an agreement between the U-S and Russia averted an attack on Syria.

As Lebanon is grappling with an influx of Syrian refugees, the latest UN figures highlights the extent of the crisis. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees has said one out of five people living in Lebanon are refugees who have fled the conflict in neighboring Syria.
Some 30 percent of the Refugees live in substandard shelters. Lebanon\\\'s government has refused to set up official camps for the refugees fearing a crisis similar to that of the Palestinian refugees 52 thousand of whom were living in Syria. Many of Syrian refugees are unregistered and undocumented migrants and live in hundreds of unofficial tent settlements on northern and eastern peripheries. The figures provided by the UNHCR do not include hundreds of thousands of refugees who are not registered. But estimates show that there could be over one million Syrian refugees in Lebanon living in tents like these. Some, 280,000 are children of school age, and over 70% very much dependent on any humanitarian aid they can get. The greatest suffering in the camps is seen in the eyes of the children. This boy was eager to go on television hoping that our presence would attract humanitarian aid. The women complain about how they\\\'re not getting enough help for their children: This man was a school teacher in Syria\\\'s Hama. Now he\\\'s trying to help create an educational center for children of school age, many of whom have not received any education for two years: Lebanon currently hosts the highest number of refugees from Syria. More than a million other Syrians have fled to Jordan and Turkey. The United Nations has warned that the number of Syrian refugees will almost double over the next year to top four million.

Iran\'s Foreign Ministry has summoned the Swiss ambassador to Tehran in protest of the latest US sanctions.
The Swiss Embassy in Tehran officially represents US interests in the country. Iran\'s deputy foreign minister told the Swiss envoy that Washington\'s measure is not in the spirit of the Joint Plan of Action. That\'s the official name of a recent nuclear deal between Iran and the permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany. Tehran\'s complaint comes after the US added a number of individuals and companies to its anti-Iran sanctions list. The Iranian official added that claims by the US Treasury\'s under-secretary about Iran\'s links with terrorism show the confusion of American authorities. He also described Iran as one of the world\'s main victims of terrorism.
