Donât have self-confidence!
We have âself-confidenceâ in our terminology. But, there is no such thing as self-confidence in the religious texts. People tell us, âHave self-confidence.â What do they mean? They mean you should have spiritual power and strength, so that you can make decisions firmly and take action firmly. Stand by what you say. Donât be shaky. This is what they mean by self-confidence. But, in Islam, the Qurâan, and discussions about the traditions and religion there is no talk about self-confidence at all.
When we say self-confidence, do we mean spiritual power and strength? God says, âYes, having spiritual power and strength is a good thing. But, why do you want to gain it through self-confidence? This is very wrong.â We say, âSo how should we gain this spiritual power and strength?â God says, âBy trusting in Me! Why trust in yourself?!â
There is a wrong term, which people often use. Itâs self-confidence. It is very wrong. An ignorant person trusts in himself. I have all these weaknesses. As the Qurâan says, I am âunjust and ignorant.â (Qurâan 33:73) I am so ignorant. How can I trust in myself? âBut, youâll become unsteady.â âNo, not at all.â So if you donât have confidence in yourself, where have you gained this strength?â âI trusted in God.â
A child doesnât have self-confidence. He trusts in his parents. He is even calmer than we are. Ayatollah Bahjat used to say, âChildren are never worried about tomorrowâs food.â Because they say, âMom will provide it. Whatâre you saying? Dad will provide it.â He has no doubt that his parents will provide food. A child doesnât have self-confidence. That is why he strongly trusts in his parents. He is constantly connected to his parents and wonât let go of them.
Have you seen a child in a gathering sitting and playing next to his parents? The parents get up to go somewhere, and the child starts screaming, âDonât go. Sit down!â They say, âIâll come back.â âNo! If you go, I canât count on your coming back. I have to be with you.â Whoever hugs him, he wonât listen at all.
We should scream in the same way if we move away from God. How does a child depend on his parents and stay calm? Weâre supposed to trust in God in this same way and find peace. We want to cut our ties with God and stand on our own feet. God says, âOk, go ahead. Poor person, you are âunjust and ignorant.â Every moment you are unjust to yourself. You are acting ignorantly every moment.â
âWonât our self-confidence be ruined when you call us, âunjust and ignorant?â You say that we are so ignorant and unjust.â âYes, your self-confidence will be ruined. Are you supposed to have self-confidence?â âSir, if a person doesnât have self-confidence, heâll become unsteady and weak.â âCompensate your shakiness and weakness with God!â
There is a wrong term, which people often use. Itâs self-confidence. Itâs very wrong. A child doesnât have self-confidence. That is why he strongly trusts in his parents. He is constantly connected to his parents and wonât let go of them. Weâre supposed to trust in God in this same way and find peace. Trust in God!

Ahmadinejad hails petrol self-sufficiency - Complete Speech - Oct16-2010 - English
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has downplayed sanctions against the country, saying threats made Iran move towards gasoline self-sufficiency.
"They (the enemies) wanted to threaten a great nation through imposing sanctions on gasoline and they thought they could impose their policies on our country," ISNA quoted Ahmadinejad as saying in a meeting with Iranian oil industry officials and experts on Saturday.
"Today we announce that we have reached self-sufficiency in the production of gasoline. It is a big event which displayed the capabilities of our experts both in the oil industry and in the international arena," he added.
He slammed arrogant powers for their dominance over the world's economy, science and technology, saying, "Arrogant countries do not know that the world [equations] has changed. This is the reason they committed big mistakes in the face of the Iranian nation."
Ahmadinejad went on to say that Iran has done nothing wrong in its nuclear program as it has always abided by all mutual agreements and the regulations of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
Iran became self-sufficient in gasoline production under circumstances that the United Nations Security Council had imposed four rounds of sanctions on the country over allegations that Tehran is pursuing a nuclear weapons program.
Iran says its nuclear program is entirely peaceful and within the framework of the Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty, to which it is a signatory.
The IAEA, in its several reports, has also verified the country's non-diversion from peaceful purposes
