Talking Properly: Politeness or Honesty? “Pious people have superior virtues. Their words are proper.” [Imam Ali (as), The Muttaqin Sermon] At the top of the list of moral virtues, which Imam Ali (as) lists for pious people, are controlling one’s tongue and speaking correctly. “Pious people have superior virtues. Their words are proper.” “Their words are proper” tells us a few things. Being proper does not mean being honest. You can talk honestly and ruin a nation. You can talk honestly and ruin a person. Backbiting is saying something that is true. [One says,] “I’m saying the truth [about him].” You are wrong to say this truth! You shouldn’t say all true things. You shouldn’t talk about a person’s fault when he is absent. Don’t say that. It is even said that when a person backbites you should defend the one who is absent. You shouldn’t say all truths. Proper doesn’t mean honesty. Talking properly is different from talking honestly. Sometimes people talk honestly in order to relieve themselves, but they shouldn’t. They tell others about their sufferings, but they shouldn’t. People sometimes talk honestly and tell others about the good deeds they have done, and that is hypocrisy. People sometimes talk honestly and show their hatred toward others. I can tell you numerous examples of honest words that are not “proper.” But I have to tell you one thing. Speaking the truth, in any area, reduces a person’s mental pressures. When you tell other people’s secrets, you release yourself. When you talk about your own pains, you release yourself. When you talk about your hatred, you release yourself. It’s interesting that some people say any truth and say, “My conscience is at ease this way.” That is not their conscious. They have relieved themselves in a way that God didn’t want. Releasing yourself like this ruins you and makes you cheap. Not all ways of finding ease are good. In the past, some psychologists used to say that if a person’s father has passed away and he has inherited money, since an obstacle has been removed from his life, why should he act like he is upset? He can easily go, have fun and say that he’s happy. Such a society will gradually lose its modesty. Do you know what happens when there is no modesty? When there is no modesty and people relieve themselves by talking honestly, they become weak. When you control your honesty due to your modesty and other boundaries, you will feel a pressure. This pressure makes a person grow and strengthens him. For example, when one gets angry, he shouldn’t curse. This brings a pressure. [One says,] “I honestly ask God to make you wretched! I wish you didn’t exist on this earth!” You should have controlled this! The result of some kinds of honesty is weakness. This pressure makes a person grow. It strengthens him. Should we push children to be honest or polite? Politeness. What is politeness? It’s basically modesty. Politeness tells a person what he shouldn’t say. Is politeness more valuable or honesty? If you don’t attack me, I’ll say politeness. A child likes to say many things honestly. But you should tell him, “You should observe these rules when you talk. This is politeness.” “Pious people have superior virtues. People tell us, “Have self-confidence.” What do they mean? They mean you should have spiritual power and strength, so that you can make decisions firmly and take action firmly. Stand by what you say. Don’t be shaky. This is what they mean by self-confidence. But, in Islam, the Qur’an, and discussions about the traditions and religion there is no talk about self-confidence at all. When we say self-confidence, do we mean spiritual power and strength? God says, “Yes, having spiritual power and strength is a good thing. But, why do you want to gain it through self-confidence? This is very wrong.” We say, “So how should we gain this spiritual power and strength?” God says, “By trusting in Me! Why trust in yourself?!” There is a wrong term, which people often use. It’s self-confidence. It is very wrong. An ignorant person trusts in himself. I have all these weaknesses. As the Qur’an says, I am “unjust and ignorant.” (Qur’an 33:73) I am so ignorant. How can I trust in myself? “But, you’ll become unsteady.” “No, not at all.” So if you don’t have confidence in yourself, where have you gained this strength?” “I trusted in God.” A child doesn’t have self-confidence. He trusts in his parents. He is even calmer than we are. Ayatollah Bahjat used to say, “Children are never worried about tomorrow’s food.” Because they say, “Mom will provide it. What’re you saying? Dad will provide it.” He has no doubt that his parents will provide food. A child doesn’t have self-confidence. That is why he strongly trusts in his parents. He is constantly connected to his parents and won’t let go of them. Have you seen a child in a gathering sitting and playing next to his parents? The parents get up to go somewhere, and the child starts screaming, “Don’t go. Sit down!” They say, “I’ll come back.” “No! If you go, I can’t count on your coming back. I have to be with you.” Whoever hugs him, he won’t listen at all. We should scream in the same way if we move away from God. How does a child depend on his parents and stay calm? We’re supposed to trust in God in this same way and find peace. We want to cut our ties with God and stand on our own feet. God says, “Ok, go ahead. Poor person, you are ‘unjust and ignorant.’ Every moment you are unjust to yourself. You are acting ignorantly every moment.” “Won’t our self-confidence be ruined when you call us, ‘unjust and ignorant?’ You say that we are so ignorant and unjust.” “Yes, your self-confidence will be ruined. Are you supposed to have self-confidence?” “Sir, if a person doesn’t have self-confidence, he’ll become unsteady and weak.” “Compensate your shakiness and weakness with God!” There is a wrong term, which people often use. It’s self-confidence. It’s very wrong. A child doesn’t have self-confidence. That is why he strongly trusts in his parents. He is constantly connected to his parents and won’t let go of them. His existence depended on God. God gave flavor to his life. God was the sweetness of his life. God was what made things sweet for him. His soul didn’t enjoy anything else except God. Is the sweetness of faith something small? Are we just mentioning one of many things that are sweet?!For God’s sake, look at how indifferent we are about what is happening in the world. The Qur’an says, “He is with you wherever you are.” [57:4] We say, “Aha, ok.” “He is with you.” Such a person doesn’t taste this. He is with you wherever you are. He says, “So? What should I do?” “We are nearer to him than his life-vein.” [Qur’an 50:16] He says, “Aha.” Such a person’s brain has shut down! Tell him, “‘Wherever you turn, you are always in the presence of God.’ [Qur’an 2:115] Can you see how God has encompassed you?” But a person still feels lonely. This means you haven’t tasted the sweetness of faith. You should taste its sweetness. Do you remember when you were a little kid? As soon as your mom or dad would hug you, you would say, “Yes! Now I’m in my place. He/she is holding me. This is better.” When I was a child, I would go into my dad’s embrace in cold weather. When he would hold me under his cloak, all the problems in the world were solved for me in his embrace. After growing up, your dad’s cloak was supposed to be replaced with God, but it hasn’t happened. So you thought it’s natural for human beings to feel it’s just them. No, it’s not human beings that feel it’s just them. Yes, it’s… um... I don’t want to say sheep. They feel it’s just them, not human beings. Human beings have not been created to feel they’re alone. Do you know what Imam Husayn’s (as) companions did to him? Imam Husayn (as) loved them. When Habib bin Mazahir was being martyred, the Imam said the same thing that he said when Ali Asghar was being martyred. He threw Ali Asghar’s blood up into the sky and said, “That which lets me tolerate this tragedy is that God is watching.” He said the same thing when his friend Habib bin Mazahir was being martyred. He held Habib’s head on his knee and said, “O God, since you are watching I tolerate this.” This other companion of the Imam truly amazes me. He was shielding the Imam. He took this role on himself. When the Imam talked or went anywhere, he shielded him. He stood up for the arrows to hit him. He was struck so many times that he fell to the ground in front of Aba Abdillah al-Husayn (as). He said, “Imam, I can’t continue anymore.” The Imam came and put his head on his knee. He asked, “O Imam, are you satisfied with me now?” Do you know what the Imam answered him? [We should say] what kind of question is this? This truly affected Imam Husayn (as). Imam Husayn (as) said, “[My dear] you will be in front of me in Heaven. When entering Heaven you should enter in front of me.” That desert was the place of showing love. Was this easy for Husayn (as) for this companion to be struck by an arrow in his chest and fall to the ground? It was easier for Husayn (as) to be struck by the arrow himself instead of his companions. When each of Imam Husayn’s (as) companions would fall to the ground [after fighting] it is said that Aba Abdillah al-Husayn (as) would go to him like an eagle that goes toward its hunt. He wouldn’t let them bother his companion. Imam Husayn (as) would hold the companion’s head on his knee calmly and caress him until his spirit left his body. Then Imam Husayn (as), along with the other companions, would bring the body back. He wouldn’t allow anyone’s head to be cut off while he was still alive. Husayn (as) didn’t allow anyone to be beheaded…

The good interests that you have gained, now you have to sacrifice some of those good interests. Whenever you decide to do a valuable action, you should pass over one of your interests. Therefore, the Commander of the Faithful, Ali (‘a), said, “Any sin is accompanied by desire. Any act of obedience is accompanied with feelings of aversion and hardship.” With this design that the Almighty God has made within us, He has created the opportunity for testing. So, if we resist our desires and bad interests, activate our good interests, and taste the enjoyment of good interests, will we live happily? No my dear! One should oppose his or her good desires for better desires! After you have become good, will everything be solved? No, then it’s time to sacrifice the good interests that you have gained. Many religious people have a problem in this area! Satan didn’t want to open up a bar! He didn’t want to act like a gangster! He said, “Instead of this prostrating, I’ll pray 2 thousand years for You.” One might say, “One has to resist his bad interests for his good interests! He has to oppose his lesser interests for more valuable and higher interests!” No my dear! One should oppose his or her good desires for better desires! Which good interests? Give an example. For example, you love your Ali Akbar (the son of Husayn (‘a)). Now you must sacrifice your Ali Akbar. Or, you are Ibrahim. And, you love your Ismail. Now sacrifice your Ismail. In this world, the Commander of the Faithful, Ali (‘a), loved to protect Hazrat Fatimah Zahra (s) more than anything else. But, the situation required that because of God he not use his sword to defend Hazrat Fatimah (‘a) due to superior interests. And this anguish remained with him till the end of his life. It wasn’t easy for him! It is for this part of the story that we gather to read eulogies about tragedies. The way to test a person’s internal being is for him to ignore an interest. The good interests that you have gained, now you have to sacrifice some of those good interests. One should oppose his or her good desires for better desires! Condolences on the anniversary of the martyrdom of the Commander of the Faithful, Ali (as). =================================== More than the sufferings of Aba Abdillah Al-Husayn (as) are the sufferings of the Commander of the Faithful, Ali (as). Many of his sufferings can’t even be talked about. Some of them can be mentioned, but common people can’t understand them. Common people like us can’t cry over them. Imam Ali (as) possessed all the talents in the world, but he did farming for 25 years. One should weep bitterly at hearing about each day that he was digging the ground. One curses the times when the people left Ali (as) alone. The universe is at his service! He himself was upset and said, “Ask me before I’m gone from among you.” Some of the elegies about Imam Ali (as) can’t be discussed. Some of those that can be described don’t make a common person like me cry. An example is the man who said, “O Ali (as), why do you answer us without thinking when we ask you a question? Ponder over it a little first.” It was intolerable for them. Imam Ali (as) said, “If someone asks your name, will you think before answering?” “No.” Imam Ali said, \"What can I do? These things you are asking, and many other things similar to this, are obvious to me?\" See Imam Ali’s (as) loneliness. I, with my little knowledge, when I study the life of Imam Ali (as), am I able to tolerate hearing of this great man’s loneliness? How much can we tolerate this? Imam Sadiq (as) was asked, “Does visiting Imam Ali’s (as) grave have more reward or visiting Aba Abdillah al-Husayn’s (as) grave?” Most recommendations are about visiting Aba Abdillah al-Husayn’s (as) grave and Karbala. So people asked, “How much reward does visiting the grave of Imam Ali (as) have? Does it have more reward?” Imam Sadiq (as) said, “It has more reward, in the same amount as Ali bin Abi Talib’s superiority in comparison with Aba Abdillah al-Husayn (as).” Some may ask, “If this is so, why is visiting Imam Husayn’s grave mostly emphasized?” The reason is that we can be influenced by Imam Husayn (as) more. Otherwise, being influenced by Imam Ali (as) brings more reward. Visiting him has more reward and brings more light. But we cannot reach that level. We are usually influenced easier when hearing elegies and are able to pay attention to the light that shines on our heart. The Imam (as) was right to say in the dream that he saw, “O Prophet of God, I am tired of this nation.” The Prophet (s) replied, “My dear Ali, curse them.” Imam Ali raised his hands and cursed them like this, “O God, take Ali away from these people.” It was as if the earth and sky shook. The divine throne shook. Because of a problem, I will certainly pass away.” I said, “No, with God’s grace. The length of one’s life is in God’s hands. Many have had the worst disease...” He said, “No, this is different.” Maybe it was my first time meeting a person who was passing away. I was wondering, “So he won’t be alive shortly?” It was a strange feeling. He said, “I’ve accepted this. In the beginning, it was very hard to accept this truth. One morning when I woke up, I told myself, ‘You’re going to die. Live for now. Go out. Work. Talk. Communicate with people. You’ll eventually die!’ So I got up and started living. After that, when someone bothered me, I wouldn’t get upset. I would say, ‘I’m dying! I wasn’t bothered at all. I wasn’t jealous. I would say, ‘I don’t want anything. Let others collect these things.’ If a car with a bride and groom passed by, I was happy for them like their mothers. [I would say,] ‘Aww, it’s their wedding. I hope they’ll be happy.’ I would pray for young people like older people do. If a person stepped on me to move up, I would say, ‘It’s fine. Let him take it.’ If I helped someone, I wasn’t trying to become known because I wouldn’t be alive that long to benefit from such fame. I’ve become very relaxed. I don’t see any badness. My understanding of good words has increased.” He mentioned these things one by one. I felt he was talking about the pious people’s features that are mentioned in Nahj al-Balaghah. I said, “I see.” He said, “If I pass away, will God accept these from me?” I said, “Yes.” He said, “But I’ve become like this due to my thinking of death.” I asked, “Don’t you believe in God?” He said, “Yes! I do. But I haven’t become better because of that. I love God very much too. God is the only one that I have now. No one will remain for me. But death is what has corrected me. Is this ok? He thought, “They’re so cute. Let me take them to the Prophet (s).” The mother bird came. She started flying around them. He thought, “I’ll take them to the Prophet (s). Their mother is coming too.” He placed the birds in front of the Prophet (s). The Prophet (s) saw their mother and said, “Move back!” Their mother came and threw herself on her baby birds. The Prophet said, “Did you see how this mother bird put herself in danger because of her baby birds? Does she love them?” Everyone said yes. The Prophet (s) said, “God loves you more than this mother.” In another story, a mother lost her infant baby. In the middle of a battle, she was crying loudly. When she found her baby, she started nursing him. The Prophet (s) said, “Come here. Does this mother love her baby?” Everyone said, “Yes, of course. She did everything to find him.” He asked, “Is she willing to throw him into a fire?” They replied, “O Prophet of God! No, of course not!” He said, “God is kinder to you than this mother is to her child.” Don’t you enjoy participating in Imam Husayn’s (as) mourning ceremony? So why are you being rewarded for it? Let me ask this in a better way. Why are you given the highest reward? Why? Don’t you enjoy? Isn’t affection enjoyable? Isn’t affection the highest enjoyment? So why are you being rewarded? Do you know why God rewards you? Because God is [kind] like a mom. When a child becomes happy, his/her mom becomes happy too. When a youth is accepted into the university, his/her mom buys sweets. He/she says, “Mom, why do you trouble yourself? I’ve succeeded for myself.” She says, “Because I’m your mom. When I see you’re fine, happy and enjoying, I do whatever I can for you.” God is more of a mom than a mom is! Have fun and be rewarded by God! Why does God reward you when you wake up at dawn? [You might say,] “It’s very hard!” Believe me, its reward is not because it’s hard. The reward is because of the cheerfulness, energy and health that you gain. God is like a mom.
