Who says you should go to Karbala whenever you are in the mood
Agha Alireza Panahian
What if after the reappearance of Imam Mahdi (âa.j.), they say, âWhoever went on the Arbaeen walk, was effective in preparing for the reappearance.â If your grandchild or child asks you, âDad, did you go on the Arbaeen walk,â what will you answer?
Making a pilgrimage is something serious. You may go to the shrine when you are in the mood. Thatâs nice. You liked to go. When you go to Karbala you should say, âI am ready to help you.â Suddenly, everything becomes serious!
At least you should be able to say, âIf I couldnât go myself, I sent one person and paid his way. He was young and able to go to the shrine of Aba Abdillah al-Husayn (âa) so it wouldnât be empty.â âI am ready to help you.â This phrase is a part of the Arbaeen supplication. I have come to help you.
If you canât go yourself, send your child, neighbour, or colleague. Go yourself too. Say, âImam I have come to show and announce my presence, lest my name not be recorded here.â Imam Husayn (âa) is holding a eulogy ceremony himself for Arbaeen.
Shall I give you some strange news? A person may wonder at this until the end of time! Some religious groups hold gatherings during the year, but they donât do anything for Arbaeen. Isnât that interesting? They spend and work hard for their eulogy ceremonies. But, about the eulogy that Imam Husayn (âa) holds himself, they say, âThere are others who will go.â What about you?
Imam Sadiq (âa) saw one of his friends. The Imam (âa) said, âI have heard that there are some people who love us and follow us, who havenât been to Karbala for four years.â The man replied, âMany people are like this!â Imam Sadiq (âa) said, âWhat will these people tell the Prophet of God?â The man said, âHow often should a person go on this pilgrimage?â The Imam said, âPoor people, once a year. Rich people, twice a year.â
Should one go to Karbala based on his mood and when he wants to? Where have they said this? In which tradition has this been written? A soldier should go show and announce his presence.
Because we act like this and look at it in this way, the reappearance still hasnât happened yet. What if after the reappearance of Imam Mahdi (âa.j.), they say, âWhoever went on the Arbaeen walk, was effective in preparing for the reappearance.â If your grandchild or child asks you, âDad, did you go on the Arbaeen walk,â what will you answer? A soldier should go show and announce his presence.
We have advanced in spiritual matters, Itikaf, and making pilgrimages. Praise God, see how many people come to Imam Rezaâs (âa) shrine or to the Jamkaran Mosque. But friends, we still havenât reached the needed growth. Only two million people go on Arbaeen from Iran? How do you justify this? Didnât Imam Hasan Askari (âa) say this is a sign of being our follower? Donât you feel responsible? Where will you be on Arbaeen?!

If we donât consider the reappearance to be closeâŠ
If all of us were hoping that Imam Mahdi (âa.j.) will come next week, did you know that the Imam would have really come? âIf you make people hopeful that the Imam will come next week, but the Imam doesnât come, wonât people become irreligious?â
Is the reappearance truly close? Should we consider the reappearance to be close? I have to tell a story first, and then answer this question.
Prophet Noah (âa) was a prophet for 950 years. The nation had been promised, âOne day you will be rescued.â They were waiting for relief. They asked God for it. God replied, âTell your friends, âSeven years from now the relief will come. Be ready.ââ They became so happy and in a good mood! âSeven years from now the unbelievers will be destroyed and we will finally be rescued!â
These seven years finished. They passed these seven years with enthusiasm. Relief? God, the sky is silent. Relief! God said, âNoah, it has been postponed for seven more years.â Noah told his companions, âGod changed His decision; itâs âBidaâ.ââ They looked at each other, âItâs only seven years. We waited for 950 years. Weâll wait a total of 14 years.â
After the second seven years, some peopleâs belief was shaking. âGod this time wonât be like the previous time! Please donât let us lose our reputation.â After seven years, âNoah, seven more years.â âHow can I tell this to them?!â âSay it just like this! Say, âSeven more years.ââ Noah told people, âSeven more years.â Some lost their belief and said, âItâs a hoax.â âGod, how many were we from the beginning, and now some have left?! Is this the right way?! Whatever You say. But, this third seven years...â
After the third seven years God said, âNoah, seven more years.â Half of them left. The fourth seven years. âGod, I donât know how to talk to You. What should I say?â The fifth seven years. Seven more years. Very few remained. They said, âYouâre making fun of us. If you hadnât promised, we were waiting just like this!â
The sixth seven years. âGod no one is left.â âSeven more years.â Noah announced this. I donât know how many were left. But, those who were left had passed through the filters. They said, âFine.â No one left anymore. Relief came.
Now, I have told my story. What was the question? âIf you make people hopeful and the Imam doesnât come, theyâll become irreligious.â Fine! We didnât promise. We increased hope and it didnât come. Even if we had promised from God and it didnât come, their belief shouldnât have shook. This is called âBidaâ.â
âBidaââ is in our principles of faith, and we donât talk about it very much. Imam Sadiq (âa) said, âIf you knew how valuable it is to believe in âBidaâ,â you would have talked about it every day.â God changes His decisions to test His servants.
We have another tradition too. God told a nation, âIn 20 months, relief will come for you.â That nation was in captivity with their prophet. After that period, a message came that it had been postponed. That prophet informed his nation. With no exception, all of them said, âItâs fine! Whatever God says.â Relief came two days later. âGod, You said longer. It was only 20 months. What happened?!â âI saw that their belief didnât decrease. I respected their good thoughts and trust and brought relief right away.â
Why have they told us these stories?! Looks like they care about our spiritual mood. Right? They care about how we feel and about our belief. Do you know why the martyrs of Karbala were valuable? Do you know what Imam Husayn (âa) did to them on the night of Ashura?
The Imam (âa) said, âDonât have hope that you can rescue me. I will make you hopeless about life; whoever stays here, will be martyred. I will be martyred too.â He didnât leave even a little hope in their hearts for relief, even a little hope for divine help, even in appearances. Their hearts didnât tremble even a little.
Despair really makes people despondent. Whoever stayed hopeful, good for them! If someone comes and firmly tells a believer, âThis revolution definitely wonât remain till the reappearance. All of you will be destroyed,â and this person doesnât lose his hope, this is very hard. We are certain about what Imam Khomeini said, âThis revolution will remain till the reappearance.â This is one of the certainties in Imam Khomeiniâs words. We are certain, but we arenât that hopeful. What will happen if someone makes us hopeless?!
Looks like they care about our spiritual mood. Right? They care about how we feel and about our belief.

Syria slams the wording of a United Nations Security Council statement on the recent massacre of civilians in the central town of Houla. Ja\'afari said the 15-nation council misinterpreted the words of the head of the UN mission in Syria, General Robert Mood. He was referring to a part in the statement that condemned the Syrian government for the artillery and tank shelling of a residential neighborhood in Houla. Ja\'afari said it was an interpretation of Western states such as Germany and the UK. He added that General Mood had said it was unclear how the mass killings had taken place and that the events needed to be investigated. The Security Council released the statement after an emergency session to discuss the Houla killings. Over one-hundred people were killed and three-hundred others wounded in the town on Friday.

Becoming familiar with some of the sweet concepts of the Shaâbaniya Supplication / Session 2
In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful. In the beginning of the âShaâbaniya Supplication,â many reasons for not supplicating God have been mentioned. These reasons show that when a person wants to say something to God, there is no need to say anything. God hears a personâs words even before he says anything; God knows his words. The Almighty God knows a personâs needs, so how else can one talk to God? Perhaps many people donât read supplications because they think God knows everything that is in their hearts and all their needs.
The Commander of the Faithful (âa) mentions the reasons for not praying. After the passionate insistence that can be seen at the beginning of the supplication, after that intense emotion, beseeching and escaping from others, life and the world towards God, and after the enthusiasm that he shows for talking to God, he immediately says some things, which seem to be reasons for not praying. The Imam (âa) says, âI have hope for the reward that is with You. You know what is inside me. You are aware of my needs and my inner being. My return to the Hereafter and my eternal home are not hidden from you.â You are not unaware of my past or my future and what I want to tell You. âWhatever I want to say or request, and also what I have hope for my outcome, are not hidden from You.â
All of these can be a reason for not praying. âGod You know my situation!â If the Almighty God knows these, why does he insist on talking to God? Actually, I want to say that the Commander of the Faithful, Ali (âa), wants to announce the severity of his insistence here. Although God knows, he is beseeching Him and asking Him, âHear my prayer. Hear my voice. Pay attention to me when I talk to You.â When the Commander of the Faithful says these words, his insistence on praying becomes clear. âI insist and I know that You know all about me.â
We regular people may not really have this deep understanding like Imam Ali (âa) that God is totally aware about us. But, the Commander of the Faithful has a deep understanding and belief that God is aware about a person. So why does he insist for God to hear him when he knows that God hears? This shows a certain level of desire and asking, when a person puts these kinds of rational words aside. As a poem says, âSay goodbye to wisdom.â If a person wants to reason exactly, he may say, âGod, Iâm sitting here and You know all my requests.â But, when this intense emotion, enthusiasm and pleading reaches a peak, a person cannot be patient and quiet anymore. We should read the âShaâbaniya Supplicationâ with this intention that we have come to see how the Commander of the Faithful (âa) talks to God. This supplication is amazing. We should read it in a way that we are looking at the face and insistence of the Commander of the Faithful (âa).
I remember a tradition in which the Imam said some things to his companion. His companion said, âI saw that the Commander of the Faithful was leaving the city at dawn. I asked, âWhere are you going?â He replied, âIâm going after my own wishes!â The Imam was in a different mood when he said this. I asked, âWhat are your wishes and needs?â The Imam replied, âThe one who should know, knows. I donât need to tell these to anyone else.ââ Here, the Imam is saying the same sentences to his friend too. And, he left in that different mood. He would wail and cry very much (when praying).
God, if we arenât able to reach You, we ask to see at least the Commander of the Faithfulâs supplications one time, so that we can understand what is going on in the world, how Your friends felt and look at them from afar. If we are never able to imagine this feeling clearly and arenât able to experience this in ourselves, let us see it in the unique face of the Commander of the Faithful. See in the first phrase of this supplication how Imam Ali states his beliefs about God, âGod, whatever happens to me till the end of my life is in Your hands and Your knowledge. What comes to me or is taken away, benefits or loss, are in Your hands and not the hands of anyone else.â Heâs showing his extreme monotheism.
Along with this, Imam Ali (âa) is showing a great enthusiasm, and that enthusiasm doesnât allow him to be silent. Although God sees him, his severe enthusiasm compels him to talk to his God. As I explained about the previous phrase, this severe enthusiasm causes him to say, âHear my prayer. Hear my voice.â There is no need for him to say these. God hears.

These steps only 'reduce' carbon footprint; they don't relieve us of our responsibility - that is, if we are complacent in other aspects or if we are apathetic to the exploitation of environment and people by big corporations and by people in our very neighborhoods. The steps in this video can only be a starting point. (See "Story of Stuff" and "The Corporation" on this site) -----
On a different note, on the use of tap water, obviously the suggestion in the clip applies only to some countries - mostly in the west. But over in those countries too, it is recommended to use effective filters: Pharmaceuticals - like antibiotics, mood stabilizers, and sex hormones - have been found in drinking water supplies in America. See here http://hosted.ap.org/specials/interactives/pharmawater_site/day1_01.html -----
The last point about factory farming of cattle and greenhouse effect in the clip relates to the issue of excessive meat consumption. The more the demand for meat, the more grain would be fed to cattle, instead of humans. It takes about 7 gm of grain to produce 1 gm of meat protein. About 40% of world grain is fed to animals, whereas you have more than 1 billion people in the world who, as per UN estimates, sleep undernourished or hungry each day. On world grain consumption see http://www.news.cornell.edu/releases/aug97/livestock.hrs.html ---- on world hunger stats see http://www.wfp.org/hunger/stats -------
On top of that, there is environmental degradation (excessive emission of 'methane') that the clip refers to.
According to one analysis food 'production' process is more environmentally costly than food 'transportation', and if average Americans replace only 1/7 of their meat consumption with vegetables, it can minimize environmental cost equivalent to that which can be obtained through maximum localization (eating local). See more about that study at: http://www.ethicurean.com/2008/06/23/food-miles-vs-food-choices/ -----
Some people want to make it an argument about "food miles vs. food choices". I think we can incorporate all of these good ideas into our lifestyle - as we encourage eating local and organic (wherever it's realistically possible), we should also encourage cutting down on meat consumption.

Description:
The current spell of miserable weather in the European Union\'s de facto Capital, Brussels, reflects the mood of many EU citizens who have fallen victim to the economic crisis. As the OECD cut its growth forecasts for the Eurozone and urged the European Central Bank to do more, the European Commission was setting out specific economic recommendations for member states. France, Spain, the Netherlands, Slovenia, Poland and Portugal are being given more time to implement painful economic cuts and raise taxes. The Commission, though, has warned the countries to use their extra time wisely or face possible sanctions for not complying.

The Strategic Role of a Bad Trait
Sometimes there is only one bad trait, but it causes a person to go to Hell. Very simple. It makes a society wretched. This means this evil has a strategic role. Some evils in general have a strategic role. For example, jealousy is strategic.
Amru Aasâs son narrated, âOnce, I was sitting in the Mosque. The Prophet of God (s) said, âWhoever wants to look at a person that will go to Heaven, look at this old man who will enter now. He will definitely go to Heaven.ââ
Amru Aasâs son was a sensitive and astute person. He wondered about him?! He was young. He came to the old manâs house and said, âI have had an argument with my father and donât have a place. Will you let me stay in your house?â The old man accepted.
He stayed there for three days and watched him day and night. He saw that he was a regular person. He couldnât find anything special in him! He prayed, slept, ate, worked, etc. He didnât recite the Qurâan or fast in a special way.
After three days, he told the old man, âIâm sorry. I lied that I said I had an argument with my father. I wanted to watch you closely to see how you are. And I saw that you are a very normal person.â The old man responded, âWas I supposed to be abnormal?â He replied, âThe Prophet (s) said that you will go to Heaven. You have something that we donât.â The old man replied, âThatâs very kind of the Prophet to say so. I donât know.â He asked, âTalk some about your mood and work.â
The old man replied, âI am like âthis and that.ââ Suddenly the old man said, âIf God gives a virtue to anybody, it isnât hard for me.â I say, âHow nice. Good for him. How beautiful.ââ Amru Aasâs son said, âThis is what we are unable to tolerate.â I am unable to tolerate for God to give something to someone with no reason. I say, âWhat about me?!â
Some traits are strategic. Like the trait of jealousy. Actually, what is the first negative trait that is born in a human being? Jealousy starts from the age of three. It bothers the child too. You should have children very close in age, not very close, at least three years between them, so that this child feels jealous, becomes bothered, and learns to pass on it. You vaccinate him or her.
âThis is how it is! You have come into this world to pass the test of jealousy. With your small brother or sister, see how it is. Feel what Cain, Talha, Zubayr, Muâawiah, and Umar Saâd felt. The story started from here. Fight! Fight with your jealousy my little one.â Let your child practice and you help him or her. This is the way it is. Is it possible for God not to tell us to work on such a strategic trait like jealousy every day? Is it possible?
What part of the Qurâan is obligatory to recite every day? Chapter âHamd.â â(Lord), guide us to the right path, the path of those to whom You have granted blessings.â (Qurâan 1:6-7) You didnât feel bad?! God has granted them blessings. What about you? âNo, guide me to their path. Itâs not a problem that He has granted them blessings. Iâm not jealous.â Good job! Good job! ââŠthe path of those to whom You have granted blessings,â means that Iâm not jealous. Actually, Iâm humble in another way too. Not only Iâm not jealous or miserly, but Iâm humble in another way too. What is that? âGuide me to their path.â
Jealousy is the basic theme of Godâs test about religion. Guardianship shows itself there. One of the miracles of our religion is the religious mourning ceremonies for Aba Abdillah al-Husayn, which work on our most basic, strategic, bad trait. In each meeting, your jealousy towards the âGuardiansâ will be struck down so that you wonât become like Cain. It brings us out from being like Cain.
When they talk about Abelâs tragedies, your heart softens and warms so that you wonât become Cain. May I be sacrificed for Husayn (âa) and his children that they were all beaten so much to create this humbleness in us. You will see on the Day of Judgment how much Husayn (âa) has struggled for us. This was Godâs design! This Able (Husayn) that we burn for helps us not to become Cain.

Why is this world so attractive for us, but Heaven isnât?
My friends, the world entices us, right? What element of the world entices a person? Tell me, what causes us to become interested in this world and not pay attention to the Hereafter?
âHeaven doesnât entice us, but the world does.â Answer me. âEntertainments.â There are better entertainments in Heaven. Itâs accessible now, right? How many of you agree? Itâs accessible now. Believe me; it would take 10 sessions for me to make it clear for you that the accessibility of the world doesnât attract a person!
Because, each flower in the world has terrible thorns that only ruin a personâs mood. You should look at this world correctly, this accessible world. Eating causes an unpleasantness that weâre not willing to mention in the meeting. You would stop eating. You wonât enjoy sleeping, which is like dying, anymore. Donât talk about the world being accessible. Being accessible is ineffective. âSince the Hereafter is on credit, it doesnât attract us.â Look! Itâs just us talking here. Lying has a limit. You know how young, unmarried people think about marriage. They think, âWow! Thereâll be a lot going on in the future.â
The enjoyment from our imaginings is more than the actuality. Therefore, the accessibility of the world is not attracting you. The Hereafter being on credit doesnât push you away. Whatâs the problem? Remembering the world ruins us. The accessibility of the world doesnât ruin us! Its memory ruins us. Remembering the accessible world makes us interested in it. Will we become interested in the Hereafter without remembering it?!
Make remembering the Hereafter a part of your life. Then, see if the accessible world affects you. I swear, it wonât have an effect. What should we do to remember the Hereafter more? Imam Baqir (âa) said, âRecite at least 50 verses of the Qurâan every day. Recite it at 14 different times, donât recite it once and put it aside.â Basically, the Qurâan is a book, which reminds of the Hereafter. It takes a person to Heaven or Hell in each moment, and brings him or her back.
What causes us to keep our distance from the Hereafter? Not remembering it. The Qurâan is the best program. Remembering the world ruins us. Make remembering the Hereafter a part of your life. Then, see if the accessible world affects you. I swear, it wonât have an effect.

1- Feel the resemblance between the âNight of Destinyâ and the âResurrection Day.â
2- Be optimistic and pray for forgiveness, our wishes, and particularly for getting close to Him.
3- Be restless to achieve closeness to God.
4- The faithful should resemble the sinful in showing empty hands to God. The sinful must pray like the faithful with hearts filled with certainty as to Godâs Kindness and Generosity.
5- Attract God\'s Compassion by being kind to others (by forgiving and praying for them).
6- Be generous by praying for others.
7- Help those in need, and be kind to relatives.
8- Show kindness to our parents, pray for our spiritual leaders.
9- Ask for a good livelihood and the destruction of those who bring about poverty.
10- Join the prayer gatherings with other people, at least for a part of the night.
11- Recite supplications, which are appropriate with our mood.
12- Read some of the Qur\'an.
13- Reflect and evaluate ourselves.
14- Think about the moment when we leave this life and review our will.
15- Donât neglect remembering and thinking about Imam Ali (âa).
16- Continually feel the presence of the living Imam, al-Mahdi (âaj).
17- Plan for our future and changes to be made in our behaviour.
18- The third âNight of Destinyâ is the night to pray for the coming of Imam Mahdi (âaj).
19- Pray for a good destiny and martyrdom in the way of God (if one wants).
20- Make a pilgrimage to Imam Husaynâs (âa) shrine, or send your greetings to him from far. Pray for the martyrs.
I ask for your prayers,
Alireza Panahian
