In Bahrain, a prominent opposition leader appears in court to defend himself against charges of inciting violence.
Khalil al-Marzooq a top member of the main Shia political bloc al-Wefaq rejected charges that he encouraged anti-regime attacks in the tiny Persian Gulf country. The arrest of Marzooq has prompted the Shia-led opposition to suspend political talks with the regime. Bahrain has been the scene of a nonstop uprising since 2011. Thousands of anti-government protesters have been staging regular demonstrations on the streets calling for the Al Khalifa royal family to relinquish power. The regime has responded with a crackdown in which scores of people have been killed and thousands arrested.

A UN envoy says the deadly violence against a Muslim minority in Myanmar poses a serious threat to the country\\\'s economic and political reforms.
The U-N special rapporteur on the human rights situation in Myanmar has warned against anti-Muslim sentiments in the Southeast Asian nation. Tomas Ojea Quintana says Myanmar\\\'s military junta needs to do more to protect the vulnerable community. He says the underlying issue of discrimination against Muslims and particularly Rohingyas remains unaddressed. Hundreds of Rohingyas have been killed in sectarian violence in the western Rakhine state since last year. The continuing violence and rights abuses have forced hundreds of thousands to flee a country that does not even accept them as legitimate citizens.

A territorial dispute between China and Japan seems to be far from over. In the latest development, Beijing has sent four coastguard vessels to the disputed islands in the East China Sea.
The move follows Beijing\'s mention of war after Tokyo approved a plan to shoot down Chinese drones if they fly over Japan\'s airspace. China has threatened to take firm countermeasures, if Japan fires on its drones. Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has accused China of trying to change the status quo in the region by force, adding that\'s why Tokyo is expected to take a leadership role over regional security issues. The relations between the two Asian powerhouses have been strained particularly over a group of disputed islands-- known as Senkaku in Japan and Diaoyu in China. Both countries claim sovereignty rights over the uninhabited resource-rich islands that are currently under Tokyo\'s control.

Saudi foreign minister Saud al-Faisal says Iran has deployed troops to Syria and that the country\'s under occupation. Faisal was speaking at a joint news briefing with US secretary of state John Kerry in Riyadh. Saudi Arabia has been the main supplier of weapons and funds to the insurgents fighting the Syrian government. The weapons which include Israeli missiles are purchased on the black market. Last week, French newspaper Le Figaro reported that Saudi Arabia\'s intelligence chief is the real mastermind behind the insurgency in Syria and leads the militants from a command center in neighboring Jordan. France says the European Union would likely lift some sanctions on Iran in December as part of a nuclear deal between Tehran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany.
Foreign Minister Laurent Fabuius has said that in a few weeks time, the EU foreign ministers would sit down for talks over the partial removal of sanctions on Iran. He noted that the lifting of sanctions would be limited, targeted and reversible. France\'s top diplomat also described as unlikely any strike on Iran by Israel, saying no one would understand such an attack at this stage. On Sunday, Iran signed an agreement with the United States, Russia, China, Britain, France and Germany over its nuclear program in Geneva. Representatives from Iran and the permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany are in Geneva for another round of technical talks over Iran\'s nuclear program.
The talks come after four days of similar talks in Vienna last week. Iran walked out of the last round after the US expanded its sanctions against Tehran. The added measures came as, under a landmark deal in Geneva last month, the West had promised not to slap new sanctions. Tehran says it\'s ready to pick up the talks after the E-U foreign policy chief, Catherine Ashton assured it that the P-five-plus-one countries, specially the U-S, would continue the talks in goodwill. Meanwhile, France\'s Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius, who had previously blocked a deal under the influence of Israel, has already cast doubt on the chances of a final agreement in Geneva.

The United Nations Security Council has expressed concern over the humanitarian crisis and the deteriorating security situation in South Sudan amid a fierce political battle.
The UN said an attack by armed men on its compound in Jonglei state left two Indian peacekeepers dead on Thursday. The targets of the attack were said to be members of President Salva Kiir\\\'s tribe who had sought refuge in the UN compound. The violence began on Sunday in the capital Juba following a failed coup and has since spread rapidly across the country. The president has accused former vice president Riek Machar of attempting to seize power by force. At least 500 people are believed to have died since Sunday in the fighting between the army and Machar\\\'s supporters. The oil-rich country has been struggling to achieve stable government since it seceded from Sudan in 2011, with Western support.

Terrorist attacks continue to kill people in Syria. The International Committee of the Red Cross has said in a report that the conflict has left half a million people wounded. The recent defeats suffered by foreign-backed insurgents have apparently prompted their western supporters to try and end the deadlock in syria through diplomacy. But are they serious about ending the war in the first place?

Around the world Shia Muslims are commemorating Arbaeen: the 40th day since the martyrdom anniversary of the grandson of Prophet Mohammad and the third Shia Imam.
Millions of people from across the globe have gathered in the holy Iraqi city of Karbala, the resting place of Imam Hussein. Officials estimate that some 15 million pilgrims are attending the ceremonies despite deadly violence by extremist groups. Dozens of pilgrims have been killed in recent days in terrorist attacks despite tight security measures across Iraq. Similar ceremonies are held in other Muslim countries including Iran, Lebanon and Pakistan. Imam Hussein and 72 of his companions were martyred in the Battle of Karbala in the seventh century.
