Syrian Deputy Prime Minister Qadri Jamil says compensation by countries that participated in Syria\'s destruction will be one of the priority issues at the upcoming Geneva II conference.
In an interview with a Russian TV network, Jamil, who is a leader of the internal opposition, stated that those who destroyed Syria must be held accountable. He pointed the finger at Turkey, accusing the country of looting Syria\'s industrial hub, Aleppo. He went on to say that any unbiased international investigation into looting will lead to a ruling in Syria\'s favor. The Syrian deputy prime minister added that corrupt figures who subsequently became representatives of foreign-backed opposition groups will also have to pay for post-conflict reconstruction. Damascus has time and again said that armed gangs are being backed by the West as well as regional countries, such as Turkey, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia. According to media reports, militants from the United States, Canada, France, Britain, Germany, and a number of other countries are fighting in Syria.

His comments come as the United States and Russia, who support opposing sides in the conflict, have been trying for months to bring the Damascus government and the divided opposition to the table for a peace conference. But with the war deadlocked, the opposition has shown no interest in compromise, forcing the meeting to be repeatedly postponed.

Reports coming out of Syria suggest that the army has retaken control of the ancient Christian town of Sadad from al-Qaeda-linked militants.
This follows week-long clashes in the town, which is located north of Damascus. Al-Nusra Front insurgents had recently captured key areas of the town, including a checkpoint that gave them control of the western part. The fighting forced many people to flee to the nearby city of Homs or remain trapped in their homes. Sadad has a strategic location near the main highway leading to the Syrian capital.

UN-Arab League envoy Lakhdar Brahimi says Syrian President Bashar al-Assad could play a constructive role in a future transition in his country.
Brahimi is in Damascus on the latest leg of a regional tour to rally support for the upcoming Geneva talks. In an interview with a French magazine ahead of his trip, he said a deal on Syria\'s arsenal of chemical weapons has transformed Assad from Quote-- a pariah into a partner. On Sunday, the veteran Algerian diplomat was in Tehran, where he insisted on Iran\'s participation in the Geneva conference. However, Brahimi faces an uphill task in convincing the fractured foreign-backed opposition to attend the talks. And 19 militant groups have issued threats against those who plan to attend the Geneva conference. Brahimi says he fears Syria may become a failed state like Somalia if a peace agreement cannot be reached.

A new report by the news service of the Pontifical Mission Societies highlights the massacre of 45 Christians in the village of Sadad near Damascus. The killing has been the biggest massacre of Christians in the Syrian conflict which began two-and-a-half years ago. The report blames the foreign-backed Takfiri militants for the massacre while criticizing the U-S government and its mainstream media for remaining silent. Christians say they are fleeing their homes as the persecution is worsening in insurgent-held territories in the north. Latest media reports from Syria say insurgents fighting against the government plan to use a group of nuns kidnapped from their convent in the town of Ma\'loula as human shields.
The 12 Syrian and Lebanese nuns were kidnapped from a Greek Orthodox convent after the notorious al-Nusra Front militants took over parts of the Christian town. The nuns were then taken to Yabrud - a town under insurgent control north of Damascus. This, as Syrian forces have been deployed to the historic town to restore security there. The militants took over the town on Monday after rolling explosive-filled tires down the hills onto government forces, following three days of intense fighting. The kidnappings have drawn condemnation from the Vatican. Iran has also slammed the assault on the Christian religious site and called for the immediate release of the nuns. It\'s also urged the international community to take immediate action to prevent such criminal acts from taking place in the future.

A newly-emerged letter on social media has revealed that Saudi Arabia agreed to the plan to send many criminals for fighting in Syria back in 20-12.
The letter was apparently issued by the Arab monarchy\'s Interior Ministry in March last year. It says the accused were from different nationalities. They would receive amnesty if they agreed to being trained and sent to Syria for fighting the government of President Bashar al-Assad. The letter also shows that most of the criminals were convicted of drug-related offences, murder, and rape, and had to be beheaded by sword under Saudi law. Syria\'s envoy to the U-N had earlier revealed that SAUDI criminals were among the militants fighting against Damascus. Bashar al-Ja\'fari said the Saudi intelligence was aware of the presence of such criminals in Syria.

The opposition Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says a militant group calling itself the Islamic Front seized a crossing on the Turkish border from other insurgents. The capture of the Bab al-Hawa crossing came a few days after the Islamic Front took control of some arms depots of the Free Syrian Army. The Islamic Front does not recognize the F-S-A, which is one of the main armed opposition groups fighting the government. Meanwhile, masked gunmen have abducted a prominent Syrian human rights lawyer in Douma, a suburb of Damascus. Foreign-backed militants continue their attacks on residential areas in Syria.
The insurgent shelling of the Meridian district of the northern city of Aleppo killed several civilians on Wednesday. They also captured the area of Adra, northeast of the capital Damascus. More than 20 civilians, mostly Alawites, are said to have been killed in the militant attack there. This is while, Kurdish People\'s Protection Units have recaptured the north-eastern village of Tweineh, near al-Hasakah city, following clashes with militants of the al-Qaeda-linked al-Nusra Front. In recent days, some regional and international leaders have warned of growing extremism in Syria. This, as insurgents fighting the Syrian government enjoy the logistical and financial supports of Western and some regional Arab countries.

The UN secretary-general has deplored the use of chemical weapons in Syria and has called on the international community to sanction those responsible for the chemical attacks.
Ban Ki-moon\'s statement came a day after a UN report concluded that banned chemical weapons were used at least five times before Damascus agreed to dismantle its arsenal. However, the report did not lay blame for the attacks. The report said evidence indicated chemical weapons were probably used in Khan al-Assal outside Aleppo on March 19 against soldiers and civilians. The government and opposition accused each other of using chemical weapons at Khan al-Assal, and the report said none of the parties in Syria denied their use in the village. Swedish expert Ake Sellstrom, who led the UN investigation team that compiled the report, reminded reporters that the mandate did not allow him to point the finger at anyone.
