On the15th of November 2011, Iran celebrated the day Shai Muslims believe the prophet of Islam held Imam Ali\'s hand up high, and announced to all those present that he would be his successor.
At the age of 14 Imam Ali was the first man to accept the Prophet Mohammad\'s invitation to Islam. Little did he know he would be the first to take on the responsibility of guiding the Muslim community after the prophet? That was 14 hundred years ago, but today the image of that pivotal moment in Islamic history, is still a tear jerker for Shia Muslims everywhere.
The Al-Ghadir Eid is known as the Eid of Velayate. Velayat means guardianship. The guardian of the Muslim world is known as the Vali Faghih, a unifying figure to which Muslims can refer for Islamic guidance.
He is a leader, but like jurisprudence, can decide how modern-day issues should be dealt with. For decades, this vital element of Islamic society was absent in Iran and the world. But in 1979, centuries of monarchical rule came to an end in Iran, via a revolution led by Imam Khomeini, and realized by the millions that rallied behind him as their leader.
Months later in a referendum the people voted for an Islamic Republic, a unique form of governance that would revolve around religion and the will of the people.
The Iranian nation voted for a constitution that called on the nation to choose a Vali Faghih via an expediency council made up of learned religious clerics that again, the people appoint. Choosing the leader of a people, not just a nation, is no easy task.
He must be a man who not only has all the qualifications to make those big decisions, but also have certain character traits as well. He must be just, brave, virtuous, and tactful. He must be an Islamic scholar, and have the ability to make religious decrees.
Iran has had a Vali faghih for 32 years now, and because Iran is the only country to have such a system of governance, it\'s not very well known or understood in the global community. In this segment of Iran Today, we will be calling on the experts to give us a deeper understanding of the political aspect of Vali Faghih, how he is chosen and his responsibilities.

The international atomic watchdog has called on Tehran to clear up all the outstanding questions on the matter. The U.S. has promised to introduce new sanctions against the country's oil industry. Washington also reportedly told Tehran to wrap up its nuclear programme by spring 2012, or it will stop holding back Israel's long-planned attack on the Islamic republic. Talk of such a strike has been heard from Israel in the past two weeks, following the IAEA's report that failed to disprove Iran's drive for nuclear weapons. But Dr Seyed Mohammad Marandi from Tehran University believes the only difference sanctions will make is expose Washington's weakening influence on the situation.

Iran is clad in black as people mark the martyrdom of Imam Hossein in a two day national holiday. The Shiites regard the grandson of Prophet Mohammad and their third Imam as the symbol of freedom and courage. The Tasua symbolizes a day when Imam Hossein told his 72 loyal companions that by the next day or the Ashura, they would all be killed in an unequal battle with the huge army of Yazid some 14centuries ago. The Bani Umayyed Caliph was notorious for his oppression against the people.
Iranians call him the Martyr of all Martyrs. Imam Hossein, his children and his brother Abbas were beheaded and his companions killed in the battle which took place in the plains of Karbala. He had already declared that he would sacrifice everything in the line of freedom against the tyranny of Yazid. Men and women, young and old remember their martyr by dressing in black and holding various symbolic mourning ceremonies across Iran. Each tribal group such as the Azaris, Arabs, Lors and Persians has its own way of marking the Tasua and Ashura.
For hundreds of years the love for Imam Hossein has become an inseparable part of the people's lives in Iran. Some people dedicate their houses and all their possessions to be used for serving the mourners of Imam Hossein in Tasua and Ashura.
Giving away free food is also another tradition which is seen across the country during the two days of mourning. To the Iranians Imam Hossein is a school of thought which they feel committed to preserve. They believe that it is through such ceremonies which they can keep his thoughts alive and pass it on to future generations.

It also makes us aware of the people, then and now, who tried to destroy Islam and all that they stood for - as well as those who watched, listened and did nothing.

George: The Yanks are going home from Iraq, well except the nearly 5000 of them who died and apart from the thirty thousand plus severely wounded and too damaged probably ever to make it back to home.
Of course the three million Iraqis driven out of their country into exile many of them begging in the countries alongside Iraq may never go home.
Also the Americans are going home without two trillion dollars of their people's money that they expended on this ruinous and disastrous war.

What started as a regular basketball game between two teams, ended in the arrest of 30 Turkish youth. Police in the Turkish city of Kayseri stepped in after the crowd, waving Palestinian flags, began protesting against the Israeli team.
According to the indictment, they have been accused of "insulting Israel".
This is not the first time Israeli players have been forced off the court. In 2009, some 3000 Turkish fans disrupted a game in the capitol Ankara.
Soma analysts say these events shine a light on the growing rift between the long-time regional allies, who share trade, military and strategic ties.
Tensions between Turkey and Israel were at one time, reserved only for the political leaders. However that is now being seen on the streets. This is especially true since the deadly raid on the Gaza aid ship back in May of last year that saw 9 Turkish activists' killed.
Israel refuses to apologize to Turkey for the deaths saying their troops acted in self defense.
According to Hayrettin Turan, the editor of the foreign desk at Turkiye Newspaper, relations between the two countries really soured with the Israeli invasion of the Gaza strip in December 2008.
While Turkey is a predominantly Muslim country, it is a secular one, leading some to believe it will make a good role model for new governments in the Middle East.
Turkey also maintains strong ties with Iran and with that growing influence across the region. The dilemma now rests with Israel and how long they feel their policies will keep them afloat.

Like a zombie, America is shambling towards war with Iran. Nobody, or almost nobody wants to see a gross expansion in the War on Terror. Yet the military and political apparatus of the United States lurches mindlissly forward, with new sactions and new accusations, ever-closer to initiating disastrous strikes on a sovereign country.
Does anyone care? indeed, since the first term of the Bush administration, many have expressed concern that the U.S.-Instigated wars in Central Asia would culminate in a ruinous conflict with Iran that would devastate global markets and lead to an unprecedented crackdown on civil liberties and human rights at home. Zarfar is ready to lecture on the dangers, and the efforts to prevent the war, and also make the Middle East a nuclear-wapons-free zone.

Russian Ambassador to the United Nations Vitaly Churkin earlier said any proposals including an arms embargo or a demand for Assads resignation would be vetoed.
The United Nations Security Council has just voted on a draft resolution concerning the ongoing violence in Syria. Of the voting members Russia and China were the only ones to vote against the draft but as permanent members of the UNSC they both hold veto power, and the resolution has not been passed as a result
A political analyst says the United States and NATO are preparing the grounds for a military intervention in Syria under the pretext of "humanitarian grounds."
"A US-NATO led intervention, which would inevitably involve Israel, is already on the drawing board of the Pentagon," Michel Chossudovsky wrote in an article published on Global Research.
The author said a report conducted by the Arab League observer mission in Syria dispelled the mainstream media lies and fabrications, used by Washington to push for "regime change" in the country.
"[The Arab League mission] was also pressured into upholding the lies and fabrications of the mainstream media, which have been used to demonize the government of Bashar al-Assad," Chossudovsky said.

[13 April 2012] Bahrain uprising - Middle East Today - Presstv - English
Rights activist Abdulhadi al-Khawaja's family is fear for his life in Bahraini jails. Khawaja, the co-founder and former president of the Bahrain Center for Human Rights, began a hunger strike in early February to protest against the life sentence he received last year and Manama's ongoing crackdown on peaceful protests. Amnesty International has also called for the 'immediate and unconditional release' of al-Khawaja, considering him a 'prisoner of conscience, detained solely for exercising his right to freedom of expression.' Hunger strikes seem to have an effect on the Israeli authorities who are holding thousands of Arabs and Palestinians in jails without trial. Why does it seem harder for Bahraini activists in jail with unjust sentences to get their rights? What are the humanitarian conditions which stipulate holding a UNSC meeting to discuss a crisis in a country?

Supreme Leader Meets with Army Commanders and Personnel
22/04/2012
Ayatollah Khamenei the Commander-in-Chief of the Iranian Armed Forces met today with the commanders and personnel of the Army\'s Ground Forces. Speaking at the meeting, Ayatollah Khamenei said that the most important issue is the determination and motivation that results from religious faith. He stressed: \"Strengthening deep and firm religious motives must always receive attention from the management of the Armed Forces and these motives must not be neglected even for a moment.\"
His Eminence said that religious faith prepares the ground for firm and effective motives, further adding: \"Faithful and courageous people\'s deep and firm motives reveal their effect at sensitive and fateful junctures, just as our faithful soldiers and Armed Forces managed to resist and achieve victory against the Ba\'ath Army, a fully equipped army which was supported by the superpowers.\"
Ayatollah Khamenei said that it is necessary to maintain and strengthen the spirit of resistance in the Armed Forces. \"Of course, besides acquiring knowledge and developing a firm character, our military commanders should enjoy a spirit of sincerity and avoid becoming attached on the material world.\"
He referred to the progressive movement of the Iranian Army over the past three decades and stressed: \"Today the Islamic Republic of Iran\'s Army is one of the most populist organizations in the country. It is also a divine and Islamic army which truly serves our national interests.\"
Ayatollah Khamenei said that the hegemonic powers claim that their armies have been established to safeguard national interests and added: \"Despite the claims made by the hegemonic powers, their armies are at the service of promoting political ambitions and safeguarding taghuti powers, and national interests are not at all important for them.\"
His Eminence reiterated: \"By massacring the people of Iraq and Afghanistan and by committing crimes in these countries, is the US Army really trying to serve the national interests of the American people?\"
The Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution added: \"The Islamic Republic of Iran\'s Army is the only army that is at the service of the people and national interests. And its members and commanders share the same beliefs and feelings as the people.\"
Ayatollah Khamenei said that the Army has been shaped by its progressive movement after the victory of the Islamic Revolution. He added: \"It is necessary to constantly strengthen this auspicious movement in the Islamic Republic of Iran\'s Army.\"
His Eminence reiterated: \"Today a movement has started in the world which is opposed to categorizing countries as domineering and dominated, and Islamic Iran is at the epicenter of this movement.\"
The Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution said that the Islamic Republic of Iran has become the target of threats and sanctions because it is the epicenter of this movement, further stressing: \"After permeating the minds and bodies of Muslim nations for more than three decades, this extremely important movement has emerged as a concentrated force and the developments in Egypt and certain other countries are the result of this movement.\"
Ayatollah Khamenei said that the colonialist and hegemonic powers of the world are extremely afraid of the movement and reiterated that their fear is fueled by the determined and faithful youth of Islamic Iran and the knowledge and insight of the Iranian people.
He stated that the Islamic Republic of Iran\'s Army plays a significant role in this regard and added that it is necessary to strengthen it.

[26 May 2012] US accomplice to Bahraini regime's crimes - English
The Bahraini regime forces backed by troops from Saudi Arabia have once again attacked protesters in the tiny Persian Gulf littoral state. Security forces on Friday fired teargas and sound grenades at the demonstrating crowds in several towns and villages around the Bahraini capital, Manama. Clashes then erupted between government forces and the pro-democracy protesters demanding the ouster of the Al Khalifa regime. Several people were injured during the demonstrations. The protesters also voiced their anger at the US government for its support of the Manama regime. Anti-American sentiments are high in Bahrain after Washington announced earlier this month that it would resume arms sales to Bahrain. However, Bahraini opposition groups and activists condemned the decision, saying it could encourage further human rights violations in the Persian Gulf country.

Supreme Leader Meets with MPs of 9th Majlis
13/06/2012
Ayatollah Khamenei the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution met this morning with the MPs of the ninth Majlis. Speaking at the meeting, Ayatollah Khamenei said, \"In fulfilling its important and essential duties, the Majlis should have the characteristics of being alive, active and vibrant and it should also be healthy in terms of different political, ethical and financial dimensions.\"
His Eminence said that sense of responsibility, pure intentions, reliance on God and trying to satisfy God are the main requirements for the success of the efforts by the Majlis. He added: \"If this perspective and this spirit prevail, by Allah\'s favor, all the paths will be opened up in front of us and all the problems will be resolved.\"
Ayatollah Khamenei said that relying on the endless power of God is the secret behind the power and progress of the Islamic Republic, further adding: \"In the chaotic materialistic world, the Islamic Republic has stood up to defend divine and human values, and by understanding this issue, the MPs should consider strengthening one\'s relationship with God as the true secret behind achieving success.\"
His Eminence said that the enmity of the arrogant powers towards the Islamic Republic is due to the plundering nature of the domineering powers. He added: \"Some people sarcastically tell us not to pitch the world against the Islamic Republic. But this is a thoughtless comment because putting forth religious rule and religious democracy has naturally provoked global pharaohs to confront the Islamic Republic.\"
The Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution referred to the Majlis as an essential pillar of the Islamic Republic and said that the Majlis should be vibrant and healthy.
Ayatollah Khamenei said that good legislation and appropriate supervision are the most important factors that show the vibrancy of the Majlis.
Ayatollah Khamenei said that active political involvement in national, regional and global developments is another sign of the vibrancy of the Majlis.
The Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution referred to the regional developments and added: \"Today the region is in turmoil and the conditions of this important region, which is considered the heart of the world, are extraordinary.\"
He reiterated: \"If our MPs adopt appropriate positions on the regional developments at the right time, they will definitely influence public opinion in the region and in the countries that play a significant role in the regional developments.\"
Elsewhere in his statements, His Eminence called on the MPs of the ninth Majlis to avoid leveling allegations against different people.
Ayatollah Khamenei highlighted the necessity of unity and solidarity, further adding: \"Unity does not mean that there should be no differences of opinion. Nobody is afraid of differences of opinion, but it should be completely clear that in spite of differences of opinion, government officials are moving forward hand in hand on the path of improving the country and achieving the goals of the Revolution.\"
The Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution said that discord is a sign of weakness and added that as far as differences of opinion are concerned, problems should be settled by referring to the law or the Guardian Council.
Ayatollah Khamenei pointed out that all the sides that are involved in an issue speak about the necessity of avoiding discord. \"But instances of discord can be seen sometimes and all our government officials and organizations should preserve and strengthen unity and solidary.\"
At the end of his statements, Ayatollah Khamenei said that there are bright future prospects for the Iranian nation and the Islamic Republic. He expressed hope that Iran will make good progress and achieve tangible results in administration of justice.

[19 June 2012] Israeli citizen gives up citizenship - English
24 year old Andrey Pshenichnikov is in the French capital with a purpose that goes beyond tourism.
This is his passport, the one he wants to renounce. In the past, some Israelis have managed to get their citizenship revoked, but there are no known cases of these Israelis applying for Palestinian residency or a Palestinian passport.
Born in Tajikistan before the collapse of the Soviet Union, Andrey Pshenichnikov's parents moved to Russia in search of a better life.
And then the family moved to Israel.
It took only a little while before he discovered the darker side of his new country.
This experience influenced his years as a soldier of the Israeli Defense Forces.
Instead, Andrey Pshenichnikov lived and worked at the Deheishe Refugee Camp near Bethlehem, first in hotels and then in construction.
He is also open to the idea of settling down in Gaza.
Andrey Pshenichnikov says Israeli authorities have black listed him as a terrorist.
And he believes, it's easier to give up his citizenship when he's out of Israel.
He hopes, his decision will set an example and inspire others to follow.
The process to renounce his citizenship could be a lengthy one, one that Andrey Pshenichnikov says he is willing to face.

[10 July 2012] Saudi Arabia can stop ongoing revolution - English
Security forces in Saudi Arabia have killed three demonstrators in the country's Eastern Province, which has been a major scene of anti-regime protests over the past months.
The Riyadh regime forces opened fire on a demonstration in the Qatif region of the province on Sunday.
Two of the victims were identified as Akbar Hassan Shakhouri and Mohammedredha Felfel, who were among the protesters demonstrating against the detention of prominent Shia cleric Sheikh Nemr al-Nemr, who was attacked in his car upon arrest earlier in the day.
Several other protesters were also injured in the deadly incident.
Since February 2011, protesters have held demonstrations on an almost regular basis in Saudi Arabia, mainly in Qatif and the town of Awamiyah in the Eastern Province, calling for the release of all political prisoners, freedom of expression and assembly, and an end to widespread discrimination.

An analyst tells Press TV that the international community, especially the United States has been backing the wrong horse; here they have been backing al Khalifa family, the one who has been killing and torturing. Anti-regime protests have been held in several cities across Bahrain as the Al Khalifa regime continues its crackdown on peaceful demonstrations in the country.
Bahrain has been gripped by anti-regime demonstrations since February 2011. The Manama regime has been crushing the protests using harsh security tactics that have so far killed dozens of people and injured many more. Many protesters have also been imprisoned since the beginning of the demonstrations last year.
Press TV has conducted an interview with Kamel Wazne to further discuss the issue of Bahrain demonstrations.

An analyst says Pakistan has reacted coldheartedly to the recent Shia carnage in the country as it could have been controlled with ‘better intelligence, better vigilance and above all the resolve to do so.’
The comment comes as the death toll from a bomb attack targeting Shia Muslims in a market in Pakistan has climbed to 90, as the victims\' families continue their sit-in for the second consecutive day in the city of Quetta demanding government protection.
The bombing tore through the crowded vegetable market in the town of Hazara, on the outskirts of Quetta in Pakistan’s southwestern Baluchistan Province, on Saturday. The area is mostly inhabited by Shia Muslims.
On Tuesday, the mourning relatives of the victims refused to bury the bodies of their loved ones unless the government takes concrete actions and finds the perpetrators of the slaughter.
Press TV has conducted an interview with Islamabad-based political and security analyst Sultan Mahmood Hali to further discuss the issue. What follows is an approximate transcription of the interview.
Press TV: Mr. Hali welcome to the program. Would you go as far as saying that the government in Pakistan as the Hazara community is saying is responsible for a rise in the Shia killings?
Hali: Well, I won’t hold the government of Pakistan responsible for Shia killings but I would definitely call it a certain amount of callousness because they have not been able to protect the lives of the Hazaras.
What happened on January 10th this year was a terrible situation in which nearly a hundred Hazaras were killed and then they staged a demonstration refusing to bury their dead and what they are doing now is an instant replay of the same.
But as a result of that previous showdown the demand of the Hazaras was that the inept provincial government should be dismissed which it was and a government’s rule has been imposed but apparently if such a massive attack has taken place in which as reports indicate that the bomb was hidden in a major trailer then I think it is not only a failure of the intelligence agency but also the failure of the governor who had promised to look after the Hazaras.
Now you see if there is a will there is a way. If you recall just about a year or so back in Baluchistan there was a major targeting of the non-Baluchi settlers in Baluchistan at which the government cracked down and managed to stop that particular attack.
So why can’t they do that now for the Hazaras? Are the Hazaras dispensable? No they are not. They are very much a part of Pakistan. So the only thing which must be done is that desperate times call for desperate measures and the Hazaras are demanding that the Pakistan army be called in.
Unless the Pakistani army is called in although that’s the last resort but perhaps that will have to be taken to prevent the loss of more innocent lives.
Press TV: Mr. Hali just quickly, we are a bit short of time. We did see the new Baluchistan governor saying that the security forces or the government forces are scared of the militants and that’s why they’re not taking action. Some were saying that this is just shifting the blame; that actually the government is knowingly not taking action?
Hali: Well, I’m afraid there is an element of truth in it. As I just told you that there was an incident earlier in which the non-Baluchis were being targeted.
So if the government decides to take a very stern action, they can very well control this because the militants after all at the end of the day they are humans, they are not super humans.
So I am sure they can be controlled with better intelligence, with better vigilance and more importantly the resolve to get to them.

The death toll from a bomb attack targeting Shia Muslims in a market in Pakistan has climbed to 105, with many of the severely wounded dying overnight.
The bombing tore through the crowded vegetable market in the town of Hazara, on the outskirts of Quetta in Pakistan’s southwestern Balochistan Province, on Saturday. The area is mostly inhabited by Shia Muslims.
Pakistani police official Fayyaz Saumbal said over 160 people were also wounded.
