Training Children in a Magnanimous Way Train your children with generosity. Train your children with magnanimity. If they make any mistakes, call them to account a bit later. Or, not at all is even better. Ayatollah Bahjat’s son said, “When my father wanted to tell us something, he would tell a story and we had to think about it to understand what he meant. Sometimes after a few days, we would think, ‘Maybe he had meant this.’ After a few more days, we would realize, ‘Aha! He was saying this.’” This was his habit. This is the result of having “Taqwa (Piety)!” See how beautiful a person becomes. His son said, “In the last days of his life, sometimes he talked about the good death of people. Then, we realized he was readying us for his death. ‘Death is nothing! It’s just like sleeping. When a person gets tired, he sleeps.’ Since I knew my father very well, I understood that he was informing us about his leaving. He wouldn’t talk directly. He would tell a story and we had to think about it to understand what he meant. Once, he told this story, ‘An honourable scholar lived with his son in one room. That scholar told his son, “Shall we put up a curtain in the middle of the room, so that there will be modesty between us?” How modest people were before. These stories are amazing.’ I heard this story. I wondered why he suddenly remembered this story. I had to think about what he wanted to say! Then, I thought since it had been a while that I had to sleep in his room due to his infirmity, maybe he meant that I have to put up a curtain. I put up a curtain in the room when he had gone to teach. Later, I asked him, ‘I have put up a curtain here. Is it good?’ He showed his satisfaction.” This is how it becomes. This is so beautiful! O God! It’s very beautiful to live like this. For you to treat your child as a person too, don’t call him to account whenever he does something wrong. Also, don’t encourage him whenever he does something good. Let him stand on his own feet. Always be kind to him. “You’re saying we shouldn’t encourage our child?!” Always encourage him. Say, “I will always buy you ice cream!” Train your children with magnanimity. Raise them to be magnanimous, so that they will be magnanimous from their childhood. There is no god, except Allah. Shall we talk about Karbala? The commander of the cursed Yazid said, “You won’t punish me if I say something? I want to say something good about Husayn’s (‘a) family.” He replied, “Say it.” The commander asked, “Am I safe? On the way, we whipped and harassed Husayn’s children very much. But, Husayn’s children didn’t say any bad words to us even once. He has trained his family well.” You have to behave with your children in the same way! This is a method. Learn this method! Afghanistan is grappling with serious economic and social woes over a decade after a US led invasion of the country. The government has also been criticized for failing to deal with these problems. The economic plight has forced a large number of Afghan children to work on the streets to try to feed their families. Kabul has a population of around six million people. Among them are around 600,000 street children who live in tough conditions. Most of them belong to fatherless families. These families depend on their children to try to find a way to survive. Umar is one of those children who have to work. A US night time air raid on their village in Kapisa province left Umar\\\'s father dead. Soon after the family lost its breadwinner, Umar left his village for Kabul. Now he lives with his uncle\\\'s family. But as his uncle is a simple shoe maker, Umer has to work too. For Umar it\\\'s a constant struggle to feed himself and send some money back to his family in Kapisa every month. Afghan president Hamid Karzai expressed his concern about the living conditions of street children in a recent address on the Afghan National Radio. Karzai asked International organizations including UNICEF to pay more attention to the issue. But some experts are pointing the finger at the afghan government and western countries for failing to do much. Today\\\'s children are the men of Afghanistan\\\'s future. But what many afghans are asking is how these poor street children who are not receiving any education will play a positive role in Afghanistan\\\'s future.

The Palestinian Prisoners Society has also said in a new report that 2-hundred Palestinian children are among five thousand inmates locked up in Israeli jails.

Whenever he or she comes home from school or the father enters the house, the parents ask about the child’s studies and immediately tell him/her to study. They immediately blame him/her, “Why didn’t you study? Why aren’t you studying now? Why are you playing now?” They immediately ask about the children’s grades and blame them if their grades are low. They immediately compare them with others. If parents do these things, it’s because of their compassion. But in doing this, they make their children hate studying. Plus, the children will start hating themselves too. If immediately after returning home from school every day, or immediately after the father comes home every day, a child is questioned, preached to and punished, this isn’t useful. Why do you do this? It will get worse. A child will become fed up. Why? Because some ideas will become formed in his mind. [He’ll think,] “Father means punishment if you don’t study.” Having this idea about his father is not good, and the child will become distanced from him. And yet, the reason behind these behaviors is that the parents are worried about their children and love them. They don’t care about other people’s studies and don’t direct others like this. They don’t care if others become wretched or become prosperous. The parents are worried about you, their child. This is the reason for their behavior, but this reason isn’t seen. What is seen? The bitterness of ordering, preaching, blaming, and checking up on them. Dear parents, even when your child returns home after an exam, exams that are held occasionally, don’t ask them about it immediately. Say, “How was the weather? Did you play after your test?” Wait one or two hours, then ask, “By the way, how was your test?” so that they won’t feel stressed. Why am I saying this? Your child shouldn’t think you are just judging, checking, blaming and punishing him. So when parents want to train their child, they must be careful of the bitter feelings that may be created. Training needs an introduction, should be occasional and must be done using different ways so as not to create negative feelings. If parents are constantly preaching, checking, blaming and asking about the child’s studies, he will start hating his parents and also hate his studies. He will also think negatively about the home, and the home environment will be irritating for him.

The 10-year presence of US-led forces in Afghanistan has not benefited the children of the war-torn country and another a lost generation is growing up. Data compiled by the UN and the Afghan government shows that 55 percent of Afghanistan\'s children have permanent damage to their brains and bodies due to poor nutrition in the crucial first two years of life. The report says chronic malnutrition is particularly widespread and persistent, while one in four children suffers acute malnutrition in Afghanistan. A recent UN study says that even a minimally healthy diet is beyond the reach of the majority of Afghans, and in some provinces, only one in five could afford regular balanced meals.
