NATO is holding one of its largest post-Cold War military drills near Russia\'s borders.
Poland and the Baltic states are hosting the war games launched on Saturday. Code-named \"Steadfast Jazz\", the exercises involve some SIX thousand troops from NATO as well as non-member states such as Finland, Sweden and Ukraine. Around half of them will participate in live exercise training, which will involve armor, aircraft and naval vehicles. NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen says the week-long war games are designed to prepare forces to defend any ally from an unidentified foreign invader. NATO\'s recent actions have raised tensions in the region. Russia has already expressed concerns over NATO\'s missile and radar deployments in Eastern Europe calling them threats to its security.

A key trial has been suspended right after its opening. An Egyptian judge has ordered the adjournment of the trial of the first democratically-elected president, Mohamed Morsi.
The trial of Morsi and his co-defendants has been scheduled for January 8. The decision came after the defendants began chanting slogans against the army, saying that they didn\'t recognize the authority of the court. Morsi is reported to have said that he is the legitimate president of Egypt, calling on the court \'to end this farce\'. Mohamed Morsi, and 14 Brotherhood members are accused of inciting violence which left 10 protesters dead. The Muslim Brotherhood has called the charges fabricated. Security is currently tight in Egypt with some 20,000 policemen deployed to the streets. Brotherhood\'s supporters are demonstrating in several cities and outside the venue of the trial. Reports say dozens of protesters have already been arrested.

A national rally held across Iran for the past 34 years; every year on November 4th Iranians take to the streets across the country to mark a historic which changed the direction of Iran-US relations. Holding banners and placards demonstrators chant \"down with USA\" on the anniversary of the US embassy take over in Tehran by university students back in 1979.
The latest rally took place as both Iran and the US recently took steps towards easing diplomatic tensions after three decades. Despite calling for a softer tone in this year\'s demonstration by some political groups this year\'s event appeared much bigger than previous years.

A Noha introducing the story of Karbala.
Noha Lyrics:
Chorus
The moon of Muharram, times of sadness have come
The crescent has now arrived, casting gloom on Karbala, casting gloom on Karbala
1
Betrayal by the Kufans, set this moon on its course
Calling out for their guide, treachery with no remorse
Muslim and his sons, what a tragedy
Oh what a calamity, the moon bleeds to forsee
2
On the ninth it heard the prayers of those pure souls
Fought the rising sun, for perhaps this could be its role
Akber\\\'s adhaan so clear, this moon filled with fear
How will it possibly arise and see the state of those dear?
3
It saw the six month infant, no water but an arrow
That night it shone its light on, Rabaab filled with such sorrow
To see my Asghar I crave, I hear nothing but his cries
Oh sun please do not arise, and with this mother sympathise
4
Witnessed it the trampling on Shaame Gharibaa
Saw that night the terror, bodies scattered afar
Tents looted and on fire, earrings snatched from Rukayya
This moon also in such pains, this household bound in chains
5
From this month my bibi, had to wander veilless
Zahra\\\'s grave is restless, for her daughter, princess
The cloak of purity, for this mother so holy
The beloved of Fatema paraded in the bazaar

A Noha about various martyrs of Karbala
Noha Lyrics:
Chorus:
Father of young Ruqayya; Akber, Asghar and Sajjad
Brother to al-Mujtaba, and abul-Fadhil Abbas
1
\\\"Al-Atash\\\" Rukayya cried; thirst apparent in her eyes; Allah-Allah
\\\"Al-Atash\\\" Rukayya cried; sorrow in her father\\\'s eyes; Allah-Allah
\\\"Al-Atash\\\" Rukayya cried; verve is in Abbas\\\'s eyes; Allah-Allah
\\\"Al-Atash\\\" Rukayya cries, her eyes meet Abbas\\\'s eyes, Allah-Allah
Ruqayya\\\'s hopes began to rise, her uncle would heed her cries
The children gathered around; watched the flag fall to the ground
From that point until her death, al-Atash had left her breath
2
Allahu Akber the adhaan came; the morning of the main campaign; Allah-Allah
Akber stood facing falsehood; ready to fight protecting good; Allah-Allah
Like the Prophet in every way; How did his father give him away; Allah-Allah
To battle he rode unconstrained; uncle Abbas had him well trained; Allah-Allah
Husayn went running at his behest; the spear embedded in his chest
If Ali looked down, he\\\'d cry; what evil my son must defy
Husayn pulled out that metal shard; the gates of Khayber weren\\\'t that hard
3
\\\"Hal-min nassir yansurunaa\\\"; calling out to the shia; Allah-Allah
Asghar\\\'s lips so dry with thirst; denied by that army cursed; Allah-Allah
Took that baby to the tent; showed them what their treatment meant; Allah-Allah
Those few that still had some heart; ran towards river Furaat; Allah-Allah
Hurmala raised his arrow; about to cause such great sorrow
The tiny throat no longer cries; this soul with Allah resides
The ground and sky are so aggrieved; that kind of blood they don\\\'t receive
4
Battle over, one man remains; tied up in hot burning chains; Allah-Allah
With inner strength he maintains calm; for now he is the true Imaam; Allah-Allah
Tortured and dragged through the street; this story he does repeat; Allah-Allah
The message spreads so far and wide; the message of Islam survives; Allah-Allah
Zainab and Imam Sajjad; sermons to Ibne-Ziyad
In Shaam young Ruqayya rests; with all the pain her wounds suggest
We await Al-Mehdi the holy guide; for only then will truth reside
5
Al-Hassan could not be there, but his letter his son did bare; Allah-Allah
Only an Imaam could know, such foresight Hassan did show, Allah-Allah
While he sought peace all his life, he knew his brother would face such strife; Allah-Allah
When Qasim sought to go and fight, that letter let him give his life; Allah-Allah
The young soldier could barely climb, on the horse even that time
In the battle he fell off his steed, Imaam rushed out to his need
Trampled Qasim is what he saw, but Imaam did not withdraw
6
Al-Atash Ruqayya cries; thirst apparent in her eyes; Allah-Allah
Permission Abbas does seek; he can\\\'t help but protect the weak; Allah-Allah
Haider\\\'s son so brave and pure; the flag held high and so assured; Allah-Allah
At the river would he drink first; horse nor man obey their thirst; Allah-Allah
He takes the mushk towards the tent; he must deliver its contents
The arrow hits his eye and bag; his arms cut off he drops that flag
Salaam on you brother Husayn; Islam\\\'s victory you must attain

Intro
When the hot sun set on Ashura, bodies lay scattered in Karbala
Did they have no shame, Ahlul Bayt were slain
Zainab lamented to Fatima
Chorus
Oh dearest mother Ya Fatima, look what has happened in Karbala
Come back and save us, they have betrayed us
Zainab lamented to Fatima
1
When your son Husayn took his beloved to the battlefield for some water
They quenched his thirst with a three-pronged arrow, Zahra you do not want to know more
Even a baby was martyerd thirsty
Zainab lamented to Fatima
2
When Husayn\\\'s son Akbar gave the adhaan they thought Rasulullah was calling
It struck them that they were on the wrong side but then they saw Ali Akbar speaking
They had no decency and felt no sympathy
Zainab lamented to Fatima
3
When my two young sons Aun and Muhammad went out and fought so valiantly
I was grateful and thanked The Almighty for what a blessing He did give me
Defending the truth, rejecting falsehood
Zainab lamented to Fatima
4
That night after Husayn had been martyred, I stood outside and alone with my sword
I was the guardian of all the children, but then a man did slowly approach
When he came closer, was it my father?
Zainab lamented to Fatima
5
When your great grandson will reappear, he will resemble Rasulullah
He will come back near the Holy Kaaba and avenge the blood of Karbala
Salaam on you son, the holy twelfth one

US President Barack Obama calls on Senate to delay imposing new sanctions on Iran, rejecting criticism by senators that Washington has not been tough on Iran. White House spokesman Jay Carney says that Obama has met top Democrats and Republicans from the Senate Armed Services, Intelligence and Foreign Relations committees and urged them to delay any decision on new Iran sanctions. As Iran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany are slated to hold fresh round of nuclear talks in Geneva on Wednesday, Obama tell the senators that new sanctions should not be enacted during the current negotiations. Meanwhile, a group of senators wrote to Secretary of State John Kerry, calling on the administration to make a tougher line on anti-Iran sanctions. The senators warned that easing the sanctions would not force Iran to abandon its pursuit of an alleged nuclear weapon. Obama says the proposed deal would permit a modest lifting of the economic sanctions on Iran.

Human rights groups in Egypt have condemned a new law on protests, saying it will restrict the right to peaceful assembly.
Based on the new law, which was signed by the interim President Adly Mansour, protesters will have to receive permission from police in advance before staging any protests. The new law comes only days after the interim government allowed security forces to enter university campuses without prior permission. Meanwhile, Egyptian students have once again taken to the streets in the capital Cairo to demand an end to the military rule. Demonstrators were marking 100 days since security forces broke up sit-ins calling for ousted president Mohamed Morsi\'s reinstatement. The ensuing violence left hundreds dead. Tensions in Egypt have been running high since Morsi was ousted by the military in early July.

Tension between Kabul and Washington continues to build as Afghan President Hamid Karzai delays signing a security pact with the United States. Washington issues a new warning, while Karzai sets new conditions for the deal. The US says it will pull all troops out of Afghanistan if Karzai does not promptly sign the agreement. The warning came during a meeting between Karzai and U-S National Security Advisor Susan Rice. Washington has repeatedly said that it cannot wait until after the April election, with Rice now calling it quote-not viable. However, Karzai has said that he will not back down from his refusal to sign the pact and will leave the decision to his successor. He has asked the US for a guarantee that it will halt all military operations targeting civilian homes. Karzai\'s spokesman says he has also called for a clear commitment to starting the peace process before the crucial security pact is signed.

General Salim Idris has described as very dangerous the militant group calling itself as the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, or the I-S-I-S. Thousands of foreign militants have in recent months joined its ranks. General Idris also claimed that besides fighting with Syrian forces, the F-S-A forces have fought another war with al-Qaeda at dozens of different locations over the past six months. The so-called Free Syrian Army also says that it has dropped the precondition for President Bashar al-Assad to leave power before the upcoming Geneva peace conference.

What does Senator John McCain, Hilary Clinton, Sheldon Adleson, the biggest donor to Republican Party political groups, and Congressman Duncan Hunter, who is a senior Republican member of the House Armed Services Committee, have in common? They have all called for attacking Iran, with Duncan Hunter calling for bombing Iran with nuclear weapons. In this debate, we\'ll discuss why these types of statements from US officials are not uncommon, and explore whether the US actually has on its drawing board plans for using nuclear bombs were it to attack another country.

Syrian media reports reject the opposition\'s latest accusation that government forces used chemicals in Damascus countryside.
Syrian media say claims of a gas attack by the army in al-Nabek are completely false and baseless. They\'re calling the allegation an attempt to justify the recent defeats of terrorist groups in their confrontations with army units. This comes a day after the foreign-backed opposition accused government troops of using poison gas. Back in August, hundreds of people lost their lives in a nerve gas attack around Damascus. Both sides blamed each other for the attack. Later on, the Syrian government agreed to give up the country\'s chemical weapons arsenal when an agreement between the U-S and Russia averted an attack on Syria.

Weeks after Iran signed a landmark deal with the permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany, more signs emerge that some members of the Congress are already preparing to torpedo it. Several key senators have asked intelligence officials to examine whether a new set of sanctions would derail the nuclear talks with Iran.
The request was made by the chairmen of the Senate\'s banking, intelligence, and armed services committees, and the reply should be ready in less than a week. The senators have also asked intelligence officials to provide briefings to the chamber -- once every 45 days starting on February first -- on whether Iran is complying with the deal. Some members of Congress are pushing for a new list of sanctions against Iran. But the White House is calling on senators to hold off. It says new sanctions against Iran would make Washington appear to be acting in bad faith in its nuclear outreach to Tehran.

More infighting breaks out between militants in Syria as the national army pushes ahead with operations across the country.
The opposition Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says a militant group calling itself the Islamic Front seized a crossing on the Turkish border from other insurgents. The capture of the Bab al-Hawa crossing came a few days after the Islamic Front took control of some arms depots of the Free Syrian Army. The Islamic Front does not recognize the F-S-A, which is one of the main armed opposition groups fighting the government. Meanwhile, masked gunmen have abducted a prominent Syrian human rights lawyer in Douma, a suburb of Damascus. Razan Zaytouni had accused al-Qaeda-linked insurgents of kidnapping activists and lawyers.

A group of defiant US lawmakers will introduce a bill to impose more sanctions on Iran despite Washington\'s efforts to hold off new measures.
Senate aides say a vote on the bipartisan plan is expected in January. The bill aims to target Iran\'s remaining oil exports and foreign exchange. The administration of President Barack Obama has been calling on lawmakers to delay any more sanctions as a diplomatic path with Tehran is pursued. Iran and the P5+1 group reached a nuclear deal in Geneva last month. Tehran agreed to limit its nuclear energy program in exchange for some sanctions relief. The sides have agreed to work to reach a comprehensive deal in six months. Tehran has warned that new US sanctions will kill the Geneva deal.

Ukraine has been hit with a wave of political unrest since late November when President Viktor Yanukovych refused to sign a trade pact with the European Union.
The refusal to sign the deal triggered major street protests by the opposition supporters, who want Ukraine to become closer to the EU and distance itself from Russia.
Clashes erupted several times between the anti-government protesters and police forces during the demonstrations. Several arrests were made in the course of the protests as well.
In an effort to calm the political unrest, Yanukovych on Wednesday invited all parties, including the opposition, to engage in dialog to resolve the crisis facing the country.
Ukrainian opposition leaders rejected Yanukovych\'s offer of negotiations, calling for dismissal of his government and release of detained protesters.
Russia has criticized Western nations for interfering in Ukraine, saying protests against Kiev\'s decision to back away from the EU deal were destabilizing the former Soviet state.
The Russian parliament, the State Duma, in a non-binding statement on Tuesday urged the West to \"stop mounting external pressure on the politics of a country that is brotherly to us.\"
The lower house of parliament also called on Ukrainian opposition forces to \"stop illegal actions\" over the political crisis.

Bahraini regime forces have arrested several people after they filed official notice of peaceful protests in the Persian Gulf Kingdom.
The main opposition group al-Wefaq says that at least three people were arrested after they gave authorities the required official request for a mass protest organized by opposition parties. Al-Wefaq condemned the move, saying authorities are using their power to punish the individuals through arrest. Bahrain has been rocked by anti-regime demonstrations since February 2011. The protesters have been calling for the downfall of the regime. Dozens of people have been killed and a large number of demonstrators arrested in the crackdown since then.

Palestinians insist that they will not accept a security plan proposed by the US, regarding their conflict with Israelis.A member from the Fatah Party of acting Palestinian chief Mahmud Abbas has told Press TV that anything detracting the sovereignty of a Palestinian state is rejected.
The plan was proposed by US secretary of state, John Kerry during his latest trip to occupied territories on Thursday and Friday ---- the second such visit in less than a week. Under the proposed plan, Israel will keep military presence in a future Palestinian state along its strategic border with Jordan. Acting Palestinian chief, Mahmud Abbas has rejected the US-proposed plan. Sources say he\\\'s also presented Kerry a letter laying down what Palestinians have called red lines. Yet, Abbas is facing growing criticism over the continuation of talks with Israelis. Critics say the talks must be halted, as long as Israel pushes ahead with its settlement projects on occupied Palestinian lands and continues aggressions against Palestinians. Although Abbas has rejected the security proposals outlined by the US, political factions are calling on him to end the negotiations and take other methods against the occupation, as they see the US taking Israel\\\'s side.

A noha about the tragedy of Ashura in Karbala
Noha Lyrics:
Fatema you have given all of your family for Allah
There is your son standing alone, calling for help to Allah
1
Where is the flag-bearer of Islam, to support him ya Allah?
Where is Akber to comfort him, the reminder of Rasullulah?
Where is Asghar with such parched lips, he was so thirsty, Ya Allah?
2
Your backbone Abbas, he loved his niece Ruqayya, your daughter
He offered his arms and his right eye, just to fetch her water
An empty mashk, a fallen flag, the moon of Hashemites, slaughtered
3
Hazrat Akber, like the Prophet in his looks and soul
He tasted death but to Allah was his ultimate goal
Standing for truth, his sacrifice, sweeter than honey ya Allah
4
Baby Asghar, he was so thirsty but he still answered the call,
On the desert plain, slain heartlessly, just six months, so small
Neither the sky nor the sacred land, would accept his blood, Ya Allah
5
A broken back, a blood-stained beard, where can he turn now Allah?
This is the son, of the Prophet\'s daughter, Lady Zahra,
When he is gone what will happen to Zainab, Ya Allah?
6
Zuljanah must carry Imaam to the battlefield, to fight,
But he won\'t leave, Ruqayya is clinging to his legs, so tight,
She is pleading, father don\'t go, just imagine Husayn\'s plight
7
Shaame Gharibaa, the tents alight no rest for the kafela,
A young girl whose ears are bleeding, searches, oh father
Asleep at last, on a headless chest, Zainab discovers Ruqayya
8
Answer me this, Ya Imaam-e-Zamaan when will you come to avenge them all
With tears of blood, we await you to come and relieve us all
This tragedy, it weighs so deep, give us patience Ya Allah

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has launched a new effort to include Iran in the upcoming Syria peace talks in Geneva.
Ban Ki-moon said that Iran needs to contribute to peace in Syria along with others in the region. He also called the division about Iranian participation unfortunate. The remarks came two days after the UN-Arab League envoy to Syria, Lakhdar Brahimi, released a list of participants for the January talks. Morocco, Algeria, South Africa, India, and Indonesia are some of the countries invited to the conference. Brahimi said that Iran is not on the list because of US opposition. Russia, which insists on Iran\\\'s participation, has criticized the US position, calling it illogical. The UN chief, however, has expressed hope that the question of Iran\\\'s participation can be resolved soon.

Turkish riot police have attacked anti-government protesters with water cannons, tear gas, and plastic bullets in Istanbul.
The angry protesters were calling for the resignation of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his government. More than 30 people were arrested in the clashes around Istanbul\\\'s Taksim Square. Similar demonstrations were held in the city of Izmir, and in the capital, Ankara, where police also fired water cannons to disperse the crowds. Erdogan is facing mounting pressure over the accusations he is trying to cover up a corruption and bribery scandal that has implicated his allies. But the prime minister claims the corruption probe is a \\\"smear campaign\\\" mounted by obscure international forces in order to undermine his government and the country\\\'s economy.
