Language is complex, and when abstract or nuanced concepts get lost in translation, the consequences may be catastrophic. Given the complexities of language and cultural exchange, how do these epic miscommunications not happen all the time? Ewandro Magalhaes explains how much of the answer lies with the skill and training of interpreters to overcome language barriers.

QA About Imam Mahdi (AS): How Do the Shias Acquire the Islamic Belief during the Occultation? | English

The Shias refer to their scholars to interpret Islamic beliefs during the occultation. The Shias follow the Quran and the traditions of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) as the essential part of their belief. They also follow the 12 Shia Imams from the progeny of the Prophet, who continued the message of the Holy Prophet. There are no differences or contradictions between the teachings and the traditions of the Prophet and the 12 Shia Imams. Thus, the Shias are blessed to have divine guidance and teachings from the generations of 12 Imams who lived among the Muslims for about 250 years after the demise of the Prophet. There are countless narrations from the Shia Imams about every aspect of the Islamic teachings and laws. The history of these 12 holy individuals is full of wisdom for any person’s life, with lessons for overcoming any challenges. The Shia theology is unique among the other Muslim sects in having access to the precious historical resources from the Prophet and the 12 Imams. As a result, the Shias are proud of having a doctrine in every aspect of the Islamic sciences.
The massive collection of the narrations and historical records from the Prophet and the 12 Shia Imams have survived through history. They are used by Shia scholars in seminaries to defend the Islamic principles and to respond to any new questions regarding Islamic laws. The Shia Imams would always encourage their followers to refer to the trusted Shia scholars for their Islamic affairs. The efforts of the Shia Imams in training scholars, spreading their knowledge, and establishing a network organization of their representatives among the Shia communities were all towards preparing the Shias for their future. This policy was also approved and prescribed by Imam Mahdi. In one of his letters during the minor occultation, Imam Mahdi explicitly referred his Shia followers to the scholars by writing, “In the events that happen, refer to the narrators of our traditions (scholars), because they are my proof upon you, and I am God’s proof upon them.”. Thus, the Shias refer to their scholars to acquire their Islamic knowledge and interpretations during the occultation.

Some parents are constantly questioning their children who are students. Whenever he or she comes home from school or the father enters the house, the parents ask about the child’s studies and immediately tell him/her to study. They immediately blame him/her, “Why didn’t you study? Why aren’t you studying now? Why are you playing now?” They immediately ask about the children’s grades and blame them if their grades are low. They immediately compare them with others.
If parents do these things, it’s because of their compassion. But in doing this, they make their children hate studying. Plus, the children will start hating themselves too.
If immediately after returning home from school every day, or immediately after the father comes home every day, a child is questioned, preached to and punished, this isn’t useful. Why do you do this? It will get worse. A child will become fed up. Why? Because some ideas will become formed in his mind. [He’ll think,] “Father means punishment if you don’t study.” Having this idea about his father is not good, and the child will become distanced from him.
And yet, the reason behind these behaviors is that the parents are worried about their children and love them. They don’t care about other people’s studies and don’t direct others like this. They don’t care if others become wretched or become prosperous. The parents are worried about you, their child. This is the reason for their behavior, but this reason isn’t seen. What is seen? The bitterness of ordering, preaching, blaming, and checking up on them.
Dear parents, even when your child returns home after an exam, exams that are held occasionally, don’t ask them about it immediately. Say, “How was the weather? Did you play after your test?” Wait one or two hours, then ask, “By the way, how was your test?” so that they won’t feel stressed. Why am I saying this? Your child shouldn’t think you are just judging, checking, blaming and punishing him. So when parents want to train their child, they must be careful of the bitter feelings that may be created.
Training needs an introduction, should be occasional and must be done using different ways so as not to create negative feelings. If parents are constantly preaching, checking, blaming and asking about the child’s studies, he will start hating his parents and also hate his studies. He will also think negatively about the home, and the home environment will be irritating for him.

When you look at the collection of religious teachings and guidance, you usually feel they mostly tell us what not to do. [Religion says,] “Don’t do that. Detach yourself from this world. Abandon your wishes.” Religions guidance and commands mostly want us to put things aside. That is why many people don’t like religion. They feel that religious recommendations are mostly prohibiting, bitter and unpleasant.
Is it really like this? Are most of religion\'s recommendations and teachings really about \"cutting off, detaching, giving something up and leaving\"? Is this true or is this a false belief? The fact is, yes, it is like this. The beloved Prophet of Islam (s) both warned and gave good tidings. He gave good news. But it’s clear that the Holy Prophet (s) is mostly addressed as a warner in the Qur’an. And his being a warner is more than his being one who gives good tidings.
Why is it like this? It’s because a person doesn’t need to be told, “Be good. Be in love. Connect with God. Reach Him. Live with love.” You know, human beings don’t need such recommendations. Why? Because a person is in love. He wants to connect [with God]. People have all these good features. They are not apparent. They are hidden in a human being.
If you abandon some things in your life, these will naturally show themselves. A person won’t fall in love by your saying, “Be in love. Be enthusiastic.” Love should come from within. Effective recommendations for people are words such as, “Abandon it. Leave it. Stop. Don’t say it. Don\'t say these words.\"
In fact, religion’s way of training is a bit like looking for treasure. You have to open the way. Pick up this and that. Pick up this rock. Break that rock. Pick these up until you reach that shining gem, or until you reach that clear source of water, for example. It is like digging a well. Some are very pure. With a little digging you reach water. For others, you must dig a deep hole to reach water. So, you see religion’s recommendations mostly tell us what we shouldn’t do. They’re more about abandoning, prohibiting and warning. Religion wants to detach a person from some things instead of advising him to become connected [to God]. Because there is no need to advise people to become connected. We are all in love and have been created in love. If one abandons some things, love will show itself.
So religion’s recommendations are prohibiting in appearances or at least there are more prohibiting ones. Religion truly wants to make people fall in love. But one doesn’t fall in love by telling him to do so. One should remove the obstacles. A person doesn’t need to be told, “Be good. Be in love. Connect with God. Reach Him. Live with love.” Why? Because a person is in love. He wants to connect [with God]. People have all these good features. They are not apparent. They are hidden in a human being.
We’ve been created for a deep, lasting love. We’ve been created for a continually increasing, warming love! How can we gain this? By abandoning many things and detaching our heart from them.

Transcript:
One of the factors that expands one\'s capacity, which we discussed last night, is good manners and morals [akhlaq], especially at home and with one\'s family. The Holy Prophet (s), who had the most and highest level of capacity, had the best etiquette of all creation. In this regard, his (s) capacity was great.
May God have mercy on Shaheed Beheshti. In his memoirs, he writes that I asked Imam Khomeini, \"During the time when you were young in Qom, who taught the class on etiquette and morals [akhlaq]?\" Imam Khomeini said that when I was young, there was no class on etiquette and morals [akhlaq]. There were individuals who embodied good etiquette and morals, who we learned from them through their actions.
No one sat and taught good etiquette and morals [akhlaq] in a class. There were individuals who embodied good akhlaq. Individuals like Ayatollah Abdul Karim Haeri Yazdi, whose entire conduct and behaviors embodied good akhlaq. I will give you one example. Notice how if someone were to see this, for the rest of their life, they would not forget it.
One day, it was raining, and it had rained very much. At that time, Qom had dirt roads, not asphalt roads- so when it rained, the streets would become muddy. Once a seminary student was passing through one of these streets. He was moving quickly in order to make it in time for his lesson. [As he was walking], he stepped in a muddy pit, and one of his shoes got stuck inside the muddy pit. He limped over to a wall and stood their one-legged wondering what he would do now. At that moment, Ayatollah Abdul Karim Haeri Yazdi, the great marja\' taqlid who truly was a great man. He was also elderly. From his place of study, which was in a mosque close by, Ayatollah Abdul Karim Haeri Yazdi came out and saw this seminary student standing with one leg while his shoe was stuck in the mud. He took off his own shoes and put it on the foot of the seminary student. He told him wear this and go to your lesson. This seminary student was shocked and said, \"Agha, I will think of something to do.\" Ayatollah Abdul Karim Haeri Yazdi without any shoes said, \"No, my home is close by. I will go home and wash my feet. You go to your studies.\"
Now look at this, for this eldery maraj\' taqlid to have an interaction like this with a youth, this is better than a thousand lessons of akhlaq given verbally. In fact, etiquette and morals [akhlaq], gnosticism [irfan], training and education [tarbiyat], before they are to be read about in books or heard in lectures, they must be seen. A person must see someone who is like this, not just hear about it or read about it in books. They must see someone like this.
Allamah Majlesi, may God be pleased with him, who compiled the \"Bihar al-Anwar\" and was a great person- on Thursday nights, he used to gather his family and speak to them for 30 minutes. He would tell them a narration [hadith], give them admonishments and advice, tell them some Islamic rulings, and recite a eulogy. He would speak to them for 30 minutes. But this Allamah Majlesi, who would speak to them for 30 minutes, he would act on these for an entire week. When his children would see his actions, akhlaq, kindness, compassion, and honesty, his 30 minutes of speaking had a deep effect within the depths of their being.
I will never forget this. There was a successful mother who lived in Tehran. She had four children who each of them was better, nobler, more religious, and more respecful than the next. They were also very educated. They asked this successful mother that how were you able to raise such good kids? Nowadays, parents don\'t have much influence over their children. It is truly like this. So they asked this successful mother that how did you raise such good kids? She said something very wise. She said that whatever I wanted my children to become, I myself practiced. That which I wanted my children to be, I myself became it.

What is the true meaning of being detached from the world?
And what is one of the prominent qualities that is seen in the immaculate and infallible Imams (A), especially in Imam Ali (A)?
Were the divinely appointed Imams (A) detached from the world because they didn\\\\\\\'t have access to the world?
What is the Islamic recommendation on how to treat one\\\\\\\'s family members?
And even though we can\\\\\\\'t reach the level of Imam Ali (A), does this mean that we shouldn\\\\\\\'t try to be like his eminence (A)?
When training and nurturing one\\\\\\\'s family members, what is an important thing that one must keep in mind, vis-à-vis their capacity?
Finally, how will you answer when asked, \\\\\\\"Can You Detach Yourself From The World?\\\\\\\"
The late Ayatollah Misbah-Yazdi (R) provides us with a short, but profound lesson on the basics of loving Allah.
