Animal Instincts Snails Fast: Snails prefer damp areas. They bury themselves under the surface layer of the earth during the day and become active at night and on cloudy days. This way they are avoiding the heat and light of the sun so that their skin won't dry. Snails get their nutrition from plants and from organic substances in the soil. Where winters are cold, snails hibernate like many other animals, fasting through the cold weather. But they also fast in hot weather. These creatures have the ability to secrete mucus to cover themselves to protect their bodies from drying out. During hot, dry periods, snails are threatened with dehydration. So they seal themselves off with a parchment like membrane, and often attach themselves to tree trunks, fences or walls. During this time they fast until cooler, wetter weather comes. Both males and females do this. When the cooler weather comes, snails come out of their shelters to seek their nutrition, declaring the end of their fast. The peaks of mountains are very cold and snowy, the temperature roughly being up to thirty degrees centigrade below zero. These insects need extra energy in the winter in order to tolerate the cold weather. During the cold winters insects fast. Whilst migrating to the mountains, an important process takes place to make sure these insects are filled with fatty substances to keep them warm during the winter and provide energy whilst they fast. During the migration they abstain from drinking water so that the ratio of water reduces in their bodies and the free-water changes form into bound-water. The conversion of water to bound-water is really important because if it were not bound then at low temperatures the water content in their bodies would freeze and their bodies would also freeze. Animal Instincts The Spiny Anteaters Fast: The spiny anteater, is a type of nocturnal, burrowing, egg-laying mammal. It lives in Australia, Tasmania, and New Guinea. It lacks teeth and is covered with spines. It has a slender snout and an extensible sticky tongue used for catching insects, such as ants and termites. The spiny anteater prefers to live on mountains and high places over 200 meters above sea level. It likes to stay in uninhabited places and shadowed forests because it likes to feed on ants. The spiny anteater puts its long sticky tongue inside an ant tunnel, and hundreds of ants cling to it, making a delicious meal for the anteater. The anteater can fast from food for more than a month. When food decreases because of an increase in population of anteaters or when a migration happens, they fast, and lack of food does not weaken them. Animal Instincts Silkworms: Silkworms fast completely from food and drink at several stages throughout their life cycle. In the beginning of spring, the eggs incubate small gluttonous larvae. The newly hatched larvae feed on mulberry leaves for five days and their bodies, therefore, grow up very quickly to the extent that their skin cannot bear this rapid development and so it's replaced by another spacious one. They must fast for one or two days until their bodies are physically able to cast away the old skin. This process repeats itself five times during the earliest stage before the completion of this metamorphosis over about thirty days. After this it enters into another kind of fasting. It takes shelter in a quiet location to spin a covering for their pupae stage. The larva spins only one thread of fine, strong, lustrous fibre, the length ranging from 400 to 1200 metres and this thread makes a covering called a cocoon, fully made of silk. The silkworm enters into the fasting, no-feeding stage (between the larva and adult in the metamorphosis of holometabolous insects) and during this period it undergoes complete transformation within the protective cocoon. It has now fully developed into a beautiful silkworm moth, which lays its eggs after fertilization. Animal Instincts Squirrels Fast: Squirrels are vegetarian animals that fast for days at a time in winter. They live in places with cold winters and are very active in the autumn. They gather nuts, pinecones, and seeds and hide them in various places to eat during the winter. While tree squirrels do not hibernate, ground squirrels do. Their length of hibernation depends on where they live. In some areas they may remain dormant as long as eight months of the year. During hibernation, they are in a state of near suspended animation. Their heart rate slows to only a fraction of its normal rate, and they might breathe only once every couple of minutes. However, they wake up for a short period every four or five days to eat from their stored food. When the warm weather begins in spring, the squirrels become fully awake and active. Ramadan is the ninth lunar month in the Islamic calendar. Muslims all over the world fast during this month from the beginning of dawn to sunset. During fasting, Muslims refrain from eating and drinking as commanded by God in His Book, the Holy Quran, which says: O you who believe, fasting is decreed for you, as it was decreed for those before you, that you may attain salvation. (2:183) A lunar month is the time it takes for the moon to orbit the earth - which is approximately 29.5 days. Therefore, the number of fasting days during Ramadan may sometimes be 29 days, and other times 30 days. But Ramadan is more than just about moon sighting and fasting. Ramadan is also the month during which the Holy Quran was revealed to Prophet Mohammad (Peace Be Upon Him). Special prayers are also held. The entire Quran is recited. It's an opportunity for Muslims to get closer to God. A month when a Muslim should try to: See not what displeases Allah Speak no evil Hear no evil Do no evil Look to Allah with fear and hope At sunset, the family will gather for the fast-breaking meal known as Iftar. This is a time of fellowship with families, friends and communities, but may also occupy larger spaces at mosques, where a hundred or more gather at a time.

Animal Instincts Penguins Fast: Penguin is one of the sea birds that live in the cold regions. In fact, 17 species of penguin have been identified in the entire world. Only one of these species inhabits the North Pole territories while the remaining species are distributed widely in the Southern Hemisphere, extending along South Australia, Africa and America. These species differ totally in their way of laying and hatching eggs. As for those living in the Southern Hemisphere, they spend the winter there. When spring comes, they return in groups to their native land in the North Pole, covering a distance of hundreds of miles until they reach their destination and location for reproduction. Once arriving there, they start immediately building their nests out of stone pieces. It takes roughly three weeks from the time of their arrival to have completed building these nests and reproducing. Once the females have laid eggs, they go off seeking food in deep-sea oceans and the male penguins take on the task of brooding eggs. The male penguins have to remain in the state of fasting for two weeks until the chicks develop. When this happens, the male penguins rush to drink some sea water and take some food. There is another kind of penguin called "the Emperor" which does not build nests, instead they spends the winter in the North Frozen Zone where it lays its eggs. The mother lays the eggs on her own hind feet. Sometimes, the male penguin may relieve her and they remain in a state of fasting throughout the winter season. When spring comes, the ice melts and the eggs are incubated. When the young penguins grow up they start fasting and abstaining from food until their down falls out and their bodies are covered with feathers. Old penguins also observe fasting for another period that is sufficient to replace their old feathers with new feathers that are more glowing and flourishing. Once this happens they throw themselves into the sea happily as if they imitate the human beings when they wear new clothes on the coming of the Eid that comes after fasting in Ramadan.
