Thousands of people have been evacuated from flood-damaged homes in northern Gaza. The United Nations and Gazan officials are talking of a humanitarian crisis.
The flooding, caused by days of torrential rains, has been so severe that many homes could only be accessed by rowing boat. The Gaza Health Ministry says one person has been killed and score of others injured as flood waters damaged poorly-built homes in the coastal territory. The government also says schools and other centers have turned into temporary shelters for thousands of homeless Palestinians. The deadly deluge has added to the woes of Palestinians in the coastal enclave, which continues to suffer from electricity cuts, a sewage crisis, and drinking water shortages-- all under a crippling Israeli blockade.

Doctors for former Israeli prime minister Ariel Sharon, who\\\'s been in a coma for nearly eight years now, say his vital body organs have failed, and he\\\'s close to death.
The former premier has been on life support at a medical center near Tel Aviv. He suffered a massive stroke in January 2006, and has been in a coma ever since. He was Israel\\\'s prime minister from 2001 until 2006. Sharon was also the minister of military affairs during the massacre at the Sabra and Shatila refugee camps in 19-82. Back then, the Israeli army invaded Lebanon and allowed the Lebanese militiamen, known as Phalangists, to go on a killing spree in the camps. Reports say between 8-hundred and 35-hundred civilians, mostly Palestinians, were killed in the massacre.

Egypt\' ousted president Mohamed Morsi has questioned the legality of his trial, as he appears before a court for a prison break in 2011.
Morsi and 130 others are accused of the prison break during the uprising against former dictator Hosni Mubarak. The former president told the judges from inside a glass-encased metal case that he remains the country\'s legitimate leader, and that the court itself is illegal. Morsi was flown by helicopter from the Borg al-Arab prison in Alexandria. The trial has now been adjourned until February 22. His other trial on the charge of inciting violence against anti-government protests, will resume on Saturday. The case has been delayed twice since it opened in November. Egypt \'s first democratically-elected president has been implicated in two other cases. The country has been gripped by mass protests since the military toppled him in early July last year.

Pakistan launches new airstrikes against militant hideouts in the northwestern tribal region, killing at least 30 people.
Military officials say the latest strikes mainly took place in the Shawal valley and Datta-khel areas of North Waziristan. They say fifteen militants were killed in the South Waziristan side of the border, and another 12 in North Waziristan. Militants are using these areas as training compounds for their attacks. Pakistani fighter jets have been pounding targets in the region since the government\'s efforts to hold peace talks with pro-Taliban militants broke down this month. In recent days, people of North Waziristan have evacuated their villages, anticipating a full-scale military offensive.
