Syrian President Bashar al-Assad says he doesn\'t rule out running for president in 2014.
In an interview with a Lebanese TV network, the Syrian president said he sees no obstacle to making a bid for re-election next year. Assad has stated time and again that he is not holding onto power and only the Syrian people will determine the destiny of the nation in elections. Commenting on the proposed Geneva II conference, Assad said -- factors not yet in place for peace talks. He cited the threats from al-Qaeda affiliated groups, fierce infighting among the militants, and the widening divisions in the fractured opposition. The US promptly responded to Assad\'s remarks. Secretary of State John Kerry said any attempt by Assad to be re-elected would extend the Syrian conflict. Kerry added that the Syrian opposition would never agree to Assad staying in power.

Syrian Deputy Prime Minister Qadri Jamil says compensation by countries that participated in Syria\'s destruction will be one of the priority issues at the upcoming Geneva II conference.
In an interview with a Russian TV network, Jamil, who is a leader of the internal opposition, stated that those who destroyed Syria must be held accountable. He pointed the finger at Turkey, accusing the country of looting Syria\'s industrial hub, Aleppo. He went on to say that any unbiased international investigation into looting will lead to a ruling in Syria\'s favor. The Syrian deputy prime minister added that corrupt figures who subsequently became representatives of foreign-backed opposition groups will also have to pay for post-conflict reconstruction. Damascus has time and again said that armed gangs are being backed by the West as well as regional countries, such as Turkey, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia. According to media reports, militants from the United States, Canada, France, Britain, Germany, and a number of other countries are fighting in Syria.

One of Egypt\'s famous pharaohs, King Ramses II, receives a special surprise from the sun as thousands of visitors come to witness the solstice in Egypt.
Five thousand tourists along with thirty ambassadors and representatives from the media gathered to catch a glimpse of the unique astronomical phenomenon, which occurs twice a year. The visitors were also able to treat themselves to a wonderful scene where the sun fell perpendicularly on the face of the statue of the third king of the 19th dynasty in Abu Simbel Temple. According to Egypt State Information Service, this rare phenomenon happens on February 22 and October 22, the day King Ramses II ascended to the throne and the day of his birth respectively.

[24 Dec 2013] Fears of Presidential Vacuum High in Lebanon - English
Lebanese President Michel Suleiman is urging rival political factions to ensure the needed quorum in parliament for the election of Lebanon\\\'s next president.Suleiman\\\'s six-year-term expires...
Lebanese President Michel Suleiman is urging rival political factions to ensure the needed quorum in parliament for the election of Lebanon\\\'s next president.Suleiman\\\'s six-year-term expires in May 2014 and is preceded by a two-month constitutional period.
Lebanon\\\'s first man has also kicked off talks with Lebanese rival factions in a bid to help Prime-Minister Designate \\\"Tammam Salam\\\" form a cabinet line-up prior to the two-month constitutional period. The cabinet line-up formation however has been in limbo for the past 9 months namely due to the Saudi-backed March 14 Bloc\\\'s boycott of parliamentary sessions citing Hezbollah\\\'s intervention in Syria as a pretext. The Saudi-backed March 14th Bloc is now calling for a neutral line-up while the Hezbollah-led March 8th is calling for an all-embracing cabinet while rejecting a De-Facto one. The proposal of a neutral cabinet has also been slammed by Lebanese Druze Leader Walid Jumblat who warned it would be a \\\"leap into the unknown\\\". Meanwhile, the Free Patriotic Movement has accused the March 14th Bloc of paving the way for a presidential vacuum through the continued boycott of parliamentary sessions dubbing the movement\\\'s obstruction of government institutions as part of instructions taken from their regional allies pre-Geneva II talks. The Free Patriotic Movement MP also highlighted what he described as an alarming pledge by Riyadh\\\'s ambassador to London who vowed continued military and financial support for the foreign-backed groups fighting in Syria even if Saudi Arabia goes it alone. The MP warned the March 14th Bloc of following their Saudi ally\\\'s footsteps as well. Though Lebanon\\\'s President has vowed a smooth transition of power rebuffing any attempt to extend his mandate, fears of a vacuum at the presidential post are simmering in Beirut for their grave consequences on Lebanon. Lebanese leaders are warning that the presidential vacuum added to the cabinet limbo would tow the country into security, political and constitutional chaos.

On the day that was supposed to be the first time that the so called divided Syrian opposition, known as the SNC, was to sit across the table from the Syrian delegation of President Bashar al Assad, not only was the UNAL League envoy not able to bring them together in the same room, the SNC would not put their precondition of Assad\'s departure aside, which brought the reaction of Syrian delegation, saying if this was not solved, they would go back to Syria.
In this edition of the debate : we\'ll ask whether a golden opportunity has been smashed by the SNC, and ultimately, what the future lies in negotiations, if any, to resolve the war on Syria.

In this edition of the show: Islamophobia, anti-Muslim racism and intolerance against Muslims. How such social phenomenon prevails in the British society? What are the differences?
Sharp rise in reported cases, including attacks on 10 mosques, raises fears of sustained targeting of Muslim communities. Two hundred Islamophobic incidents since Lee Rigby\'s killing are so far reported.
Monarchy: Australia and the British Monarchy (Part 2). A dilemmatic and skeptical sense of passing the head of state position to Charles upon death of Queen Elizabeth II is growing faster than ever.

Prospects for a Syria peace conference in Geneva next month looks dim: Key opposition leaders, including the so called SNC have rejected efforts by Western and Arab powers to persuade them to attend.
In this debate we\'ll discuss the fractured opposition and why even the coalition of countries are also fractured, in particular, Saudi Arabia, who is at loggerheads with the US policies regarding Syria. This is while Assad forces continue to advance against the insurgents in the country.
