Mansour Arbabsiar, an Iranian-American used car salesman, was arrested at New York\'s John F. Kennedy International Airport on September 29, 2011. He was charged with planning to assassinate Saudi Ambassador Adel al-Jubeir in a bomb attack on a restaurant in Washington. He signed a plea bargain offered to him by Preet Bharara, U-S Attorney for the Southern District of New York. After this one-sided out of court deal, which benefited the District Attorney, Arbabsiar was sentenced to twenty-five years in prison. He was represented by Sabrina Shroff, a federal public defender appointed by the court. Arbabsiar\'s family says that Shroff used unethical means to make her client sign the plea bargain.

The Canadian government has been spying on its people by monitoring their telephone records and Internet data, Press TV reports.
Canadian newspaper The Globe and Mail reported on June 10 that Defense Minister Peter MacKay had approved a \"metadata\" surveillance program in 2011 that tracks online activity and phone calls in search of suspicious activities.
However, in response to a question whether the Ottawa government was monitoring the phone and email records of the Canadian people, MacKay claimed that the \"program is specifically prohibited from looking at the information of Canadians.\"
\"This program is very much directed at activities outside the country, foreign threats in fact,\" he added.
The program, introduced by the former Liberal government in 2005, was put on hold on account of concerns that it could lead to warrantless surveillance of Canadians.
But according to the daily, the program was quietly reinstated in 2011, after MacKay signed a ministerial directive, which is not subject to parliamentary scrutiny.

Media reports say the US is re-visiting its options on Syria to step up pressure on the Arab nation.
U-S paper The Wall Street Journal says the move means Washington will again consider military and intelligence options, that were previously presented to the White House but set aside in favor of pursuing international talks. The options reportedly range from expanding efforts to train and equip insurgents, to setting-up no-fly zones over Syria. This comes as the U-S is already funding and supplying arms to the militants fighting to topple the Syrian government. The arms supplies have however failed to make changes on the ground in Syria in favor of the insurgents.

Victims of the 1988 chemical gas attack in Iraqi Kurdistan are taking legal action against foreign firms. Former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein bought tons of chemical weapons from European firms for his assault on Kurdistan\'s Halabja town. The head of Halabja\'s Chemical Victims Society has called on families of victims to file lawsuits against the firms that armed the Iraqi dictator.
In June a group of victims filed a lawsuit against two European firms. Dutch businessman Frans van Anraat sold tons of chemicals used in the Halabja attack.
Halabja\'s genocide victims say they are determined to seek justice from any country and any business involved in selling chemical weapons to Saddam Hussein. But the victims also want to send a clear message against the use of chemical weapons by any country in the future.

The Holy month of Ramadan is a month in which Muslims are commanded to fast from dawn till dusk for the full 30 days.
The Quran states \"O you who believe! Fasting is prescribed for you just as it was prescribed for those before you. Perhaps you would attain piety!\" (Quran 2:183)
Thus for 30 days, the lifestyles of Muslims around the world change dramatically. But although its core purpose is spiritually based, there are many health and medical benefits and implications of fasting including giving rest to the digestive system, decrease of cholesterol level in blood, and moderate weight loss.
This week\'s Islam and Life asks: What are the benefits of fasting?
