It\'s a display of fire power, defense and attack capabilities. This exercise, one of the biggest single-day drills in Alborz Province, is a chance for the Basij volunteer forces to show what\'s in their arsenal. Speaking before the drill, Commander of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps Major General Mohammad Ali Jafari said Iran\'s armed forces are fully ready to deter the enemy\'s provocations.
Speaking to Press TV, the commander of Basij division of Alborz Province said the annual drill seeks to prepare the forces to deal mentally and physically with the realities of combat.
The IRGC commander also said the drills are a way of reassuring the public that the country\'s armed forces, including the Basij, can defend them come what may.
The Basij is a volunteer force established in 1979 by the order of the late Imam Khomeini, the founder of Islamic Revolution. The force has millions of civilian volunteers across the nation.

[10 Aug 2012] Syrian refugees flee to Lebanon - English
Since the outburst of subversive activities by the western foreign backed groups in Syria, over 115,000 Syrian Nationals have reportedly fled their country seeking refuge in neighboring countries. Though officials say the number of registered refugees doesn't count those who have blended in, thus the number is not accurate. Refugees who have come to Lebanon are currently staying at crowded public schools or have set up tents in regions along the borders with Syria.

Egyptian security forces clash with and use tear gas against university students in Cairo and in Asyut governorate.
Security forces have blocked all roads leading to Al-Azhar University and fired extensive amount of tear gas at students. Several students have been injured and several others arrested. Angry students were protesting the death of two of their peers in clashes with security forces on Monday. Reports say there are clashes in both branches of Al-Azhar University in Cairo and Asyut. The students have also been protesting the trial of their peers at a criminal court on charges of attacking the Al-Azhar headquarters. The Al-Azhar student union has called for a strike across the university\'s branches until the perpetrators of Monday\'s killings are brought to justice.

Military offensives as a prelude to a diplomatic breakthrough: the Syrian army is shaking the self-confidence of western-backed insurgent groups by taking control of more lands. Areas which were previously in the hands of those trying to bring down the government of President Bashar al-Assad. Syrian forces are only few miles away from a very big gain: To take control of the western Qalamun region near the border with Lebanon. The following report tells us why the region is of high importance to Syria\'s future diplomatic efforts.

A senior Iranian military commander says his country is capable of increasing the range of its missiles, but it will not go beyond two-thousand kilometers.
The commander of Iran\'s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps, the IRGC, Brigadier General Mohammad Ali Ja\'fari, says the Leader of the Islamic Revolution has ordered Iran\'s armed forces not to produce missiles with a range of over two thousand kilometers. Ja\'fari has however said that all of Israel must remain within the reach of Iran\'s missiles. Elsewhere, the I-R-G-C commander has spoken of the situation in Syria. Ja\'fari says Syrian government forces have the upper hand over foreign-backed insurgents across the country. Ja\'fari has added that Iran will continue to support Syria because Damascus is at the frontline of resistance in the Middle East against the Israeli occupation.

Staying with Egypt, the Muslim Brotherhood has dismissed a new government claim that the group has formed a military wing.
Mohamed Ali Beshr, who\'s a prominent figure of the Islamic movement, says the Brotherhood has NOT formed any military wing to stage attacks on Egypt\'s security forces. Beshr says the group has repeatedly condemned all forms of violence and terrorism. On Sunday, the interior ministry attributed an armed branch based in the city of Beni Suef to the Brotherhood. It also accused 12 members of the group of killing five policemen. Egypt\'s Muslim Brotherhood, on whose ticket Mohamed Morsi rose to power in 20-12, has already been listed as a terrorist organization by the government.
