The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees reports that around one thousand families have fled from a battle in central Syria to the Lebanese border town of Arsal.
The UNHCR says the families were forced to walk more than 30 kilometers to reach safety. The refugees have reportedly fled from the strategic al-Qalamoun area in the north-east of Damascus. The Syrian army is fighting militants there to cut supply lines to insurgent-held areas near Damascus. Activists say fighting has intensified in the mountainous region. Lebanese officials say around 1-point-4 million Syrians have taken refuge in their country so far.

People in Pakistan\\\'s North Waziristan accuse government forces of killing civilians during an anti-Taliban operation in the region.
Local residents have put the civilian death toll at several dozen. They say a large number have also fled their homes following days of military shelling and aerial raids. The army launched an offensive in response to an attack on a checkpoint in North Waziristan. Pakistan\\\'s mountainous border with Afghanistan is known as a stronghold for Taliban militants. Military officials say nearly two dozen militants have been killed in clashes with security forces since last week. Authorities have also imposed a curfew across the lawless region.

The Syrian Army has made more advances in its fight against foreign-backed insurgents.
In its latest operation, the army ambushed insurgents in the mountainous area of al-Qalamoun north of Damascus. According to government sources, as many as 150 militants were killed in the attack. Damascus says among those killed were members of the al-Qaeda-linked al-Nusra Front. Syrian troops have stepped up their mop-up operations in Qalamoun - a strategic region whose full liberation will give the government forces a significant edge over the militants. The town of Nabk in the region was re-captured by the army two weeks ago.
